    On a scale of 1 to 10

On a scale of 1 to 10, how hard would you rate the difficulty of changing the clutch in an 89 sedan

you see, ive come to a conclusion that ive torn my clutch to shit....

a couple of months ago i noticed that when i was low rpm and tried to gun it, the revs would go up but my speed would remain the same, it did this on and off but never really that bad, but today i found that when i shifted into second and gave it a decent amound of gas, it slipped as per the problem above, so with this quarter's bonus check, which is around $900, i will get a new clutch, but since this is my first MT, i dont exactly know what I'm gettting myself into, and i refuse to take my car to a shop, unless i have no possibility of doing it myself

speaking of clutches, does anyone know where i can find a reasonably cheap performance clutch, some links would be helpful

    thanx guys

    :super:

welll, i just did my first clutch. it is kinda straight forward..., well..., yah. i'd prolly give it a 7 on difficulty(10 being hardest...). just cuz it was my first time..., and kinda annoying. but, i'm sure when i do it again..., it won't be near as bad. the only thing is that my friends car doesn't exactly move right now..., lol https://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12335 it's at the end about the clutch. i'm sure it is well worth saving the $400-500 that a shop would want to do it

*edit* for the performance clutches..., i'd go with ACT. i've heard they're the best. and, when looking for it, get the part number of the one you want, and then search for that part number on google or something. look around for the best price..., i found a Stage 2 ACT clutch once for $263

I did mine in the last 2 months. I'd give it a 7 for difficulty, and a freaking 10 for time needed to do it for the first time.

Once I had the new clutch installed, it took me 7 hours just to put everything back together. I worked nonstop and it went smoothly, too. It just took a long time. I had the car on jackstands and I only have handtools. Plus, I was doing the job by myself. You have to remove a lot stuff to drop the tranny. It's all in the "how to".

I agree 7 for difficulty but a 10 for time needed and patience required. This is a job that can be a real pain in the ass if you are not patient and try to have it done in certain time. My suggestion, pick a weekend that you know you will be home and be prepared to work all weekend.

umm check your clutch cable because mine messed up like urs did after i was next to a friend in a parking lot, i was rolling up and down a curb with my front wheels, making my clutch do a lot of work. we both had our windows down talking figuring out what we watn to do, anyways try loosening your clutch cable, its a lot easier to turn if u PULL UP on the cable, loosen it like 5 turns and just experiment with that, but remember how many times u turn it incase it doesnt work.

the CV joint was pretty easy to do..., the only annoying thing was that it was a pain to separate the lower arm..., and i broke a breaker bar trying to get the hub nut off on the passenger side lol, but napa replaced it for free (thank goodness, it wasn't my tool!)
