Well.... As most of you may or may not know, I chose to go a different route with my car. Here's the motor! Sorry for the wait super busy working on it. This is day 1 and 2 of getting the motor. Tore it apart to make sure everything was there for the most part before I decided to tear it down. More pics to come

Everything I got with purchase of the engine

Yeah I know lol I love my a20 and I put some serious work into it but stuff keeps breaking that I repair over and over and over because parts suck to find or even get. And I figure i was gonna do this to an a20 (high compression and all that) but the gains wouldn't be as nice for the price as it would be with this engine so changing it up and b series stuff is a lot easier and cheaper and they're stronger motor & trans wise

Re: Clean87sedan's High compression B18c1 build & swap thread!

Got the innovate conversion mounts. 60a

The block didn't have oil squirters in it because of the forged Pistons they hit the bottoms of the piston, so I got GE oil squirter plugs which fit great and will raise oil pressure too

The head was ported & polished on both intake & exhaust and the intake manifold was port matched and smoothed out. So I didn't want the runners to be all cast rough so I sanded the runners smooth

Guy gave me a stage 1.5 competition clutch with motor but I needed a flywheel. Did some hunting and I loved my 8lb one on the a20 so found a fidanza 8lb flywheel to match

Also needed a header. Wanted something that wasn't cheaply made and nothing that had huge runners hanging low so found this 1320 performance toda style rep header. Big tube with a 2.5" collector

Re: Clean87sedan's High compression B18c1 build & swap thread!

    Now onto the transmission!

I am using a 92-93 integra YS1 cable transmission casing with 99 civic si B16a gears, main & countershafts and 4.4 final drive. I also put the LS 5th in to help freeway driving.

The transmission was from a buddy of mine who blew the diff and pieces of it out the rear of the case and he said it was toast most likely but he didn't open it up. I opened it and cleaned out the debris and luckily somehow all the gears and internals were Good! Well besides he diff... Anyways. Here's pics of the damage done

I took all the internals, cleaned them up, got a rebuild kit from synchrotech with the carbon pro series synchros and all new bearings & seals. Also figured at this time and knew I didn't want this to happen again, I got a Mfactory helical LSD for the trans as well. This setup all together is a ys1 case, b16a2 1-4th, main & cohntershaft, 4.4 final drive, LS 5th and Mfactory LSD

    Painted the case

Re: Clean87sedan's High compression B18c1 build & swap thread!

I went ahead and decided to rip the head off to see the guts of this thing and wanted to make sure everything is done right and ready to go since I bought it second hand. Man.. These pistons are mad dome!

The head had some good scratches on the surface from the guy putting it on I'm guessing so I took it to a shop to get resurfaced. Come to find out the surface was warped a little, the head failed a vacuum test and came to find out the valves weren't installed right by previous guy. All good now though and holds vacuum!

    Before

After. Don't mind the oil on the surface.

Re: Clean87sedan's High compression B18c1 build & swap thread!

I'd be wanting to manually measure the CR just to be safe .
When i had my B20a rebuilt the measured CR end ended up at nearly 13:1 even though the pistons are 10.5:1 wisecos.
Slight difference in rod length , head and block skimmed just enough to make them flat gave a big jump .
Made it to high for the pump gas available to me .
Ended up having to take material off the tops of the pistons to get down to 10.8:1
Will be interesting to compare numbers when they are both running and tuned .
    Fully tweaked b18C v fully tweaked B20a

Yeah im looking at these saying "these are only 11.5:1????" Lol and my cylinder head is milled enough to bump the cr up another like .5 to that so.. Yeah I'm gonna have to clay the engine for clearance and see what I get

Re: Clean87sedan's High compression B18c1 build & swap thread!

what sort of gas do you have available ?
If i had 98 available i probably wouldnt have worried about dropping to 10.8:1
Probably 11.5 - 12 :1 , but since 95 is the best i can get in town at the moment and is available pretty much anywhere i go , i went a bit lower .
And gas quality varies quite a bit down this end of the world so erred on the side of safety , i cant afford 10k to rebuild from scratch if the engine gets damaged from detonation .

I run shell V power 92. There's a trick fuel station out here too that I can get gas from if I plan on beating it up at the track or something. Wouldn't hurt. My friend has a 12.7:1 d16 and he runs shell premium with no issues. I think 11.5 is the highest I would go on anything cause any higher 92 won't cut it

    Update.. Well kinda..
Tore the block down to nothing to check everything since I bought it all together. Glad I did.. Second ring on cylinder 1 was chipped. Nothin major I'm guessing the ring expander tool chipped it cause that's what it looked like and I almost did the same thing lol. Anyways, tore it apart, cleaned and inspected everything and reinstalled all ready for the head to go on after more measurements and checking piston to valve clearance.

Looking good! Interesting to see some of the things you find when tearing down someone else's work.

I'm actually thinking of the same header myself too.

I'm surprised that it has such a small crank girdle , even the b20a has a full length one.
Are the crank oil feeds in the block of the later b series ? Just wondering since the b20a has them in the girdle.

hey if you didnt put sealant(like rtv or anything) you should pull ur oil pan and:
    a. paint it with a fresh coat of black(because we all like pretty thing)
b.paint a white line around the top of it so if you develop any leaks you can pinpoint them right away.

just food for thought. build looks great tho!

They're under the main bearings in the block yes

Engine is together! Just bolting on like dizzy and other stuff everything internal is done. Timing is set, Valve lash is set, it's getting close to bolting the trans up to it
