idle shaking as in it drops down below the 900 idle rpm? IF so u need to adjust the idle screw and screw in the idle stop screw.

THe idle screw i am tlakign about is a plastic knob at the back of the carb near the firewall. turn it clockwise or counter clockwise till the desired rpm is reached

THe idle stop screw is on the left side of the carb i believe (standing infront of the car that is) and screw it in to make the butterfly valve open a lil bit.

If it staggers its due to poor AF mixture. U can also adjust that by adjusting the AJC (Air Jet Controller)<< the one with three thick vaccum lines go A-B-C

Before you decide to mess with carb settings, change the spark plugs(properly gapped), change air, fuel primary, and fuel secondary filters, and make sure your wires and distributor are in good condition.

He is feeling engine vibrations through the steering wheel and dash, his motor mounts are worn.

I had (and still have) this problem, and my mechanic says it's the hydraulic motor mount at the front (or rear -- I forget) of the engine. I think it's like $150 or so. The other mounts could be worn too, they are less expensive. I just had one replaced and the part cost like $85 or so. Don't know about the labor.

there is no hydraulick motor mount. Its just a rubber mount. You would be better off with urathene mounts when u get em replaced.

OEM Honda motor mount for the front one is liquid filled. Aftermarket motor mount for the front one is rubber. The rest of the motor mounts are rubber.
Your shaking idle problem sounds like worn motor mounts.

I just joined. I've had this vibration problem while idling for over a year in my 89 Si. Mechanic said fuel injectors needed cleaning. So I take it to a specialised mech. But then fuel injector guy said injectors were fine, my engine mounts were worn. So $AUS400 later new engine mounts but 1 week later vibration creeps back, so I take it back to fuel inj guy who increases idle speed...lasts a few days...now vibrating again. Though its vibrating less cause idle is a bit higher and the engine is firmly mounted it is still very evident and worse with a/c on. WHAT THE HELL IS IT! Valves? I think I will have the injectors cleaned anyway...I think that makes reasaonble sense coz I cant think of any other cause.

Im sure it has nothing to do with a rough running motor. The original poster didnt say his car was running bad, just that vibration is transferring through the car.

These cars are old. Alot of stuff is worn. Im sure thats why it shakes, its just the way it is. My 89 accord did it too, and ive seen alot of other Hondas do it. I just chose to live with it, it wasnt that big of a deal.

Before you change the idle rpms, you should make sure the ignition timing is correct, pcv valve is OK, and your oxygen sensor(s) are working correctly.

A while back, I had someone fix the "idle" with an adjustment, only to have to back it off when these other things were corrected (by me).

That's probably not a good idea. The fluid in the front mount helps to dampen out vibration. There was a guy on the board a few months ago that replaced his front mount with a non OEM solid rubber mount and he still had bad vibration problems until he installed the Honda part. Urethane wight work well for the other mounts, but i wouldn't use it for the front.

I have it in my '89 and I had it in my '87 too... I think it's just something inherent to our cars. If you look at how they were designed and built, you'll notice that the car's overall design is fairly simple and straightforward, without a lot of extra fluff. I think a side-effect of this is the fact that vibrations get into the cabin real easily.

My friend's mom's 97 or 98 Monte Carlo doesn't shake at all when idling and still, but you look at how that car was designed and it's complicated as hell... I'd trade "vibrating" for "the ability to work on my car without computers" any day of the week.

Re: Idle shaking and vibration ugh!!

I replaced all my mounts a while back with aftermarket and still have the bad vibration in the steering column/wheel. If I loosen the tilt part of the column, the vibration goes away. I bumped the idle up slightly and that helped, but I'm ready to try the Honda fluid filled mount and see what happens. Before doing that, while it's idling and vibrating I'm going to put the floor jack on the oil pan. I suspect the vibration will go away. If so, I will change the mount.

Which one is the fluid filled mount? Is it the one that is just behind the radiator in front of #3 or 4 cylinder that is just big and round? Not sure how soon I'll get it done, but I'll post an update when it happens. Thanks!

Re: Idle shaking and vibration ugh!!

I have this exact problem and took it to the Honda dealer. They said both front and rear motor mounts were worn. They ordered the parts and I have an appointment this coming monday to have them installed. I'll post whether it fixes the problem or not.

I got the aftermarket mounts from AutoBone. I'd wait to find out what nfs480 results are before buying mounts.

nfs480 - I guess your steering column rattles like hell and if you loosen the tilt, the rattle goes away? If so, please ask the Honda dealer which mounts have fluid in them. If it's only the big round one in the front, I'll get one of those from Honda assuming your results are good. Thanks!

Yeah, that's exactly what happens. I'll make a note to ask them and will be sure to post Monday night when I find out.

Re: Idle shaking and vibration ugh!!

My 3gee doesn't have this problem, even when my engine was running VERY rough on half the engine a while back when my ecu died I had almost no vibrations, and none at all now that its back and running well again. My stepsister's 88 LX did have this problem tho, at stoplights her car felt like it was going to vibrate apart, was somewhat irritating, but I think her mounts were shot, and her car also had a ton of rust. The vibrations didn't really hurt anything tho, she put a ton of miles on it b4 totaling it into the back of a Vette that wasn't paying attention lol....got 1200 for it from insurance when she only paid 600
