I am replacing my clutch in my Prelude. When the car is on, I can't shift into gear with the clutch in, nor knowing that the clutch cable is as tight as it can go, and even with resetting the cable and slowly tightening it looking for the grab in the pedal - it still just goes back and forth with ease (the pedal). When the car is off it goes in gear PERFECT. Here's some photos...
Did you check to make sure the clutch pedal assembly wasn't broken

10W-30 Castrol GTX. The original transmission never got fluid in it, the guy before me replaced the clutch, didn't put fluid back in it. So, I had to buy a new/used transmission 160k miles on it, put it in myself and left the previous owners clutch in, new cv axles, seals, rack and pinion, thermostat, and radiator. Got it all back in a working and running, drove it for three weeks, went to a friends house Saturday night-driving fine. Sunday morning the shifting was a little tough made it to work at 9AM, got off at 4pm got in my car started it, let the e brake off and went to put it into reverse and it wouldn't go without grinding, nor 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th. I turn it off goes into reverse like a champ, start it while in reverse, pop it out of gear with no clutch, turn it off, put it in first, started while in gear, drove to the other side of the parking lot, shut it off, and called my Pa to come tow this POS home because I didn't want to dry shift my "new" transmission. When I was pulling it out this time I drained it and everything I put in it drained out. So no leaks.. I'm befuddled.
Reverse doesn't have a Synchro it kind of makes me think that the clutch cable is stretched, throwout bearings No Good. Maybe someone else will chime in on the subject
My problem was one of the welds broke up under the foot pedal thing and everything look good but when you hit the pedal the metal would Flex and not give the clutch arm enough pull
True, which I encountered and put a new clutch cable on and still.. Wish I could call out to those who might now what's going on here.
Well for one that fly wheel is toasted need to be resurfaced or a new one. The face should look like a brand new brake rotor.
If I am understanding the clutch cable adjustment is all the way out? I dunno what the prelude one looks like but check at the bell housing end that it is in the bracket correctly and then readust it so you can get into 1st with out grinding car running. Reverse can be bit hard to get into in any car I would work on first gear myself. Too loose and the clutch will slip you will know it right away. Your clutch fork arm should have some free play at rest ,that means loose at the cable end. There is a diagram some place.

I know of what you speak, I bought a new clutch cable and started with it backed off all the way and took the slack off the arm, (it's a cable - no hydraulic system) and looked for that perfect spot you're talking about and after I installed the new cable still no clutch, I can't force the gears in, but when I have the car off I could go into any gear I want. You know drive it without the clutch but not once you stop and pull it out of gear, I don't want to wear the transmission as is it's an 86. If that's what it needs and that's what I'm thinking new all together I don't want any funny business and have to keep taking the transmission out over some silly clutch problem.
Any luck on this. Maybe a picture of your cable set up on the trans side.

I know I seen it earlier and one of the first things I asked the guy was the pedal mechanism broken in anyway. The same thing happened to me and when I looked up there I couldn't tell either
86'hpsi If that little pice is broken that is your problem. I end up bending mine away and getting a big washer to hold the cable to the firewall

I did the same thing pulled the transmission out and everything until I figured out what the problem was

I'm into keeping up with it and don't mind getting dirty, it just all new to me. I've never done any kind of overhaul like this so I'm learning. Even the greatest minds miss things. Is funny though, just glazed over itOh boy. The is the genius club up in here, eh?
