inaccurate shifting

I have an 87 honda accord with automatic transmission and 1955cc engine. The problem I'm having is that the tranny doesn't shift until the engine reachs 4500 rpms. And it downshifts at what seems to be the wrong time. Can anyone tell me why this is happening. Otherwise the tranny is fine. Thanks!

Check the throttle linkage between the tranny and throttle wheel. And next time post this in Technical.

Hey....sorry about posting in the wrong category......my bad...I'm new...what can I say? Should I be checking for adjustment...wear...breakage? I mean... is there a common problem with the shifting cables?

I helped a friend with a civic same problem as yours. Check and adjust the cable. If that doesn't do it, then change to honda ATF. The ATF fixed my friends tranny. Don't know if it helps with yours.

make sure the TV cable is adjusted right, its its too tight or too loose itll make the tranny shift funny. It should only be pulled on when the throttle is anything but closed.

mine does the same thing when its cold. a mechanic told me the seals in the tranny are just old (along with everything on our cars) if you let it warm up for a few minutes it should shift normally. im hoping to swap with a 5spd soon anyways....
