my 89 pings a bit when it is hot.
it only happens when it is hot and after a low rpm shift. any suggestions?

if nothing else works check your timing and make sure your advance mechanism is functioning properly

What grade of gas are you using? The FI models had slightly higher compression than the carbed models and usually require at least 89 octane to prevent pinging. I can sometimes get by on 87 octane (regular) in the winter, but mine will ping like a son-of-a-bitch in the summer on anything less than mid grade.
i reterded the timing when i bought the car and it made it ping less, but it's at the factory setting now. i guess it's big $$$ gas for me. time to raise the right foot i guess

where is the sound coming from? if its from the engine then i guess its the gas (ive never heard of this though)... but if its coing from like under your car it might be something simple, for example the heat shield could be loose or where your headers meet the engine... it really could be anything.
