How do you guys check your transmission fluid. I have an 89 LXi automatic that I bring up to normal temp turn the engine off and check the dipstick. It might just be me but that dipstick is a pain to read. Does anyone do it differently?

I have a 86 LXi auto. To check ATF level, engine must be off and car on level ground. I do not warm up the car to normal.
Unscrew the ATF dip stick, wipe clean with towel and insert it back but NO screwing it into the thread. Then take it out and read level. Afterwards, put the dip stick back and screw it all the way back to seal.
If need topping up, use only Honda ATF.

This is correct and the only way.

Is there any particular type of Honda ATF that is made for 1989 LXis? Or is it a universal fluid?
Go to Honda and buy ATF. I have not heard of any particular type for a specific generation. According to the parts guy, this should be universal for all Honda AT. I'm not sure about the CVT tranny though.
The current Honda ATF is DW-1.
I have been exclusively using Honda brand ATF for my 86. Never have a problem.
