I recently had my front stud replaced, and the guy said my CV joints were bad. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but I thought the clicking noise was a tale tell sighn?

Your right on that, so what your saying is that you dont hear that clicking noise while doing turns?

you can drive for a long time or untill your CV joint locks up.
it is cheaper to replace the hole shaft than just outter joint.

the spline grooves do have some slack, but they should not be that noticable. But they do have some slack in em. But a perfect one, should not go back and forth when they are set straight bwt the tranny and the wheel when the lower and upper contrl arms are bolted on the car.

wait i meant i was twisting it. not actually movin it back and forth, I mean twisting it like the engine would do if it was in gear.

nah, it should not do that, that means ur spline grooves are rounded off. pull out ur steering wheel and u will see what i am talking about, it has the almost same set up as ur CV joint with splines on the steering rod and groove cups on the wheel, If they are perfect and normal, they should not have any radial slack, as in not move even a little bit if u try to spin.
