Yes you need new struts, but not just any strut will do. All lower springs are stiffer/firmer. You need to install struts that are likewise firmer or your car will ride and drive like crap. Tokico H.P.'s should be considered the starting point and they aren't that expensive at $235 from shox.com. Koni specials are ideal with no bounce whatsoever and a nice firm feel without being annoyingly stiff. They cost more, but are worth every penny, $424+free shipping from shox.com.

well this is what i have come up with after a lot of research and talking with a bunch of ppl in my SAE group. Having a larger tire/wheel would make a lot of difference. the engine will rev low to get to the same speed that u gotta achive on a stock tire/wheel. that also means that the torque will be not the same to all your wheels at that speed cause the engine revs lil low. and also about dropping. its all fine dropping exactly 1 inch, but anything lower that that would screw with yoru CG (center of gravity) and your roll center (which is crucial for roll over factor, understeer and oversteer). I personally am not gonna go way past 15 inches though i know its gonna be sucking bad. BUt its not gonna be in the next few years. Do read a lot more about suspensions, coil overs and wheels before u start putting stuff on. I am pretty sure we guys here drive hard with our 3gs and thats why it applies to us even more. and i am sure every guy who changes is shock changes his coils too, but ppl who dont do it, gotta do it asap. To have a right wheel frequency and dampening, u need to have the right shocks and coils replaced at the same time.

I was told that if I put 18's on my 88 3g that I would have to have a camber kit. I understood the camber kit was only necessary when lowering

nah man, you shouldn't need a camber kit with just putting 18z on your car.
Nothing wrong with 18s....just get the right size tire and offset.

Weak engine + big rims/tires = off'd speedo, decreased fuel economy due to the
larger diameter of the wheels among some reasons. They seem to be just too big and heavy to be pushed normally. But they will definately fit, just make sure that the offset is +. All show, that's for sure imho.

    Why show only?

Hey guys, hate to look/sound like a fool but I am new to the import scene, I have always customized Chevy's but with the cost of fuel who can afford to drive the gas guzzling beast's? I got a great deal on a set of 18's but am willing to swap out if they really won't work. If there is a thread to answer this question please send me there. I have seen several 3g's in the threads that have 18's and are lowered on top of that, maybe those are show only. I really appreciate your input, I got a good deal on a set of Dunlop tires today and was going to put these on tomorrow unless I can be talked out of it. thanks

You can get 18's but you need the correct offset 45 or so, but going that big is all show unless you got +250whp under the hood. They best wheel size to power ratio is 15" any bigger is all for looks unless you got the power.
and thanks for using the search

the reason is that the 18" wheel uses a rather small and impractical side wall on the tire and one small pothole, ur rim is done for good. So if you are like many here and would like to drive your car pretty much all the time, 17" would be the largest rim size i would go.

For the offset, it all depends on the width of the rim. I am sure that the width you will be getting with an 18" rim is more likely 7 or 7.5 and they would require an 45+mm of positive offset. Just like what Justin mentioned above.
