New Member Alert!! Bought a little old lady 89 Accord LX 127k

Picked up a 1989 Accord LX on Sunday for $600 with 127k on the clock. I used to be a lot boy/detailer at Sims Honda back in 96-97... my first job actually, and this is one of, if not the cleanest example of a 3rd gen Accord I have seen in a really long time. And needless to say, I was the first out of many that called about it.

I got it from the second owner, a 20 year old kid who didn't do anything to it really other than drive it for a year, and installed a JVC CD player. He kept the stock Fujitsu Tape deck though.... and I have it and it will be reinstalled.

As far as I know, the story was the little old lady took it in for service because it wasn't running good, the shop talked her into a Weber 32/36, something happened along the way and the choke was no longer working properly, and she sold it to the kid I bought it from.

The kid messed with the choke and got it to run, but he could never get it to run right, and eventually he couldn't get it to run at all and he threw it on CL.

I pulled it home 150 miles on a dolly. Popped the hood and got to work as soon as I got home.

I installed a 32/36 on a 78 Celica I had back in 98, so was a little familiar with setting up the carb.

There was no power to the choke, and the screws were backed out (one was gone), the choke housing was loose, and the spark plugs were fouled.

Got the plugs clean, adjusted the choke and found a new 12v ignition source, cleaned the plugs and adjusted the timing. She runs.

Anyways, it's the 3rd Honda I've owned in my 40 years. Had a Silver 82 Prelude, a Blue 87 2.0si Prelude, and now this White Accord. I'm enamored with it.... it's like a time capsule. Window sticker was in the glove box along with the hanging placards from multiple places inside the car (cruise control and whatnot), and of course the owners manual and warranty booklet.

My other current vehicles are 2 NA Miatas, an '88 Corvette Roadster, a pair of 2004 Chrysler Crossfires (one with a 5.4 AMG V8), a V8 S-10, 06 Durango, and 05 Ram 4X4. I do all of my own work in my 1200 Sq Ft shop.

Anyways, my reason for joining the forum is to collect as much information from the guys that are smarter than me when it comes to converting these carbed 2.0 engines to fuel injection. The car will be my wife daily for her 7 mile commute to work and I want her to have the reliability of the injection. Fire it up and go.

    Thanks for tagging along

    Here's a few....

I started Hubcap restoration, and buffing out the paint. The paint I chose for the hubcaps is Rustoleum Metallic series "Satin Nickel". It doesn't match perfectly, but it's close. It has a little gold in it is what it looks like to me.

Re: New Member Alert!! Bought a little old lady 89 Accord LX 127k

Very nice find . I recently joined as well, I have a 85 efi accord that's no where in as good as shape as yours.

I was looking at a carb to efi conversion on a different car and found the work needed is a lot. Maybe its different on these older Hondas, I haven't done any research on these specific cars but from what I understand is that you'll need a high pressure fuel pump and that would be the easiest part to get out of everything else. You're gonna need a way to time your fuel (maybe you can find a ecu from a fuel injected trim of your generation), the high pressure fuel lines and filter from the tank to the pump to the engine. Then you'll need to tear out all the old lines, filter, pump, carburetor and wiring harness out of your old car and then get a intake manifold and wiring harness from a efi model and swap it in. Plumb everything and make sure you have the harness plugged in right, and pray it starts.

This is a general overview and hopefully there's more detailed instructions on this site. Either way, best of luck!
