4.5"=100mm ? and other wheel questions

I was looking at some old rims and the owners said they were 4.5"x4 is that the same as 4x100.

Another dumb question thats been covered many times, is what is the correct offset to run such that the rim is tucked in the fender and wont rub. I know it just cant remeber.

    thanks

    I'm absolutely positive that 4.5"='s 114.3mm

Desired offset is 40mm for tread widths up to 205mm. Of course that also includes 42mm, 43mm and 45mm. When you want to run 215mm tread width's you want 45mm offset. Now remember you don't want to go to much taller than oem, since the taller a tire is, the closer it moves to the fender lip.

What rim size to you want?

    4.5 inches = 4.5 in *(25.4 mm/ 1 in) = 114.3 mm

The standard offset is 40 mm, a little higher is ok too (up to 45 mm). If you want to get wider 215 tires you should try to get 45 mm offset. A quick search would have pulled this information up.

ok, so one thing that I don't ever remember being covered in the past...

I know that general rule of thumb is higher offset = better, in our case. But I was thinking about it the other day after doing a tire inspection on the hatch, and raised what i feel is a good question...

What about the knuckle clearance? Both up front and in back, the knuckle is very close to the top of the tire. My current setup is a 15x6.5(or maybe 7, just don't remember) with what I believe was a 40mm offset. 205/50 tires. Now if I were to move up to the same wheel/tire setup, but go for a 45mm offset, wouldn't I run into clearance issues with the knuckle?

PS> I've also got a set of 17x7.5" Kaizer K2's with a 40mm off. and running 205/40's, and the clearance is just as limited.

Anyone out there ever run into issues with too high of an offset?

It would take a huge wheel and tire combo to hit on the knuckle. I had 18s with a +47 offset and there was still plenty of clearance.

The only problem with such high offset wheels is that they begin to look funny when the wheel is sucked so far into the wheelwell. I hated the way my 18s looked because of that. If they were just moved a half inch out I would have liked them.

i think the answer he was looking is that 4.5"x4 (is around 4x114)is not as 4x100. you won't be able to bolt them in.
