    Engine smoking

So I recently bought an 88 accord lx for $400. The engine is smoking(white)and the engine is covered in oil. I replaced the valve cover gasket but the smoke persists. There isn’t any white smoke coming out of the tailpipe and the oil and coolant appears fine. Any ideas as to what it may be? (heads up I’m kinda a noob. Sorry.)

Clean up the engine really good, could be oil on it just burning up when engine gets hot. After cleaning up, it's easier to see where new oil leaks from and/or onto.

I can’t really tell. I think it’s the oil just burning off the entire engine it’s super hard to pinpoint a leak. Praying I don’t have a blown head gasket lol.

Thanks for the tip man. I was considering buying one of those UV kits. Do you think it’s worth it?

Not sure what you mean by UV kit Are those new gasket sets or something Or UV light tool Just clean engine real good with brakecleaner, and go from there. Common leaks are valvecover, distributor O-ring, cranksensor, oilfilter O- ring.

Well a blown head gasket usually means water and oil are mixing in the combustion chambers. Most of the time its water mixing in. A lot of light white smoke will come out the exhaust pipe and smell sweet like anti freeze.

Smoke from the engine compartment can be alot of things. One not to over look it the power steering hose that goes over the exhaust manifold will start to seep fluid on the manifold. If you squeeze the hose with you hand you can feel fluid in between layers.

So I found the leak it was the valve gasket again. The one I just installed is blown in half. Probably overtightened somehow. Got another one waiting for the sealant to cure. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Well you should really change the 3 grommets on the top also. They loose there crush. Some valve covers gaskets come with it some dont. Stock the 3 nuts are acorn nuts to help keep you from over tightening.

Also usually a dab of sealant on the four corners is all thats used. There is no need to glue anything together like on a domestic car.

What are the grommets your referring to. All I got are the three metal washers for the valve cover to bolt into

There should be a round rubber grommet under each bolt, on top of the valve cover.

That would explain all the smoke then.
