Question Rust on Mating Surface (Oil Filter Base)

    Hey All,

I've had my oil filter base off a few weeks now to do some rust treatment around the area, gonna put it back on this weekend, but noticed that its gradually rusting on the engine block. What should I do? I dont feel like leaving it is a good idea, but I dont wanna mess with the mating surface and make it unlevel. I have some 1000 & 1500 grit sandpaper I could take to it? It's not a crucial surface like the head as theres an o-ring, although its flat for a reason...

any help appreciated, could smother some oil on it in the meantime?

    Cheers!

Here state side we use WD 40 or PB blaster for a rust block on bare metal. CRC 3 36 is what the Germans like on the equipment I work on.

Really any oil will work or even diesel fuel.

If you need to sand it, just use a block if you can

Some scotch brite took it off very quickly and nicely, it looks level although I guess we'll see how the surface and new o-ring hold up when there's oil pumping round it. working in -1 C today wasnt the most fun

Not to give you more to do but your freeze plugs dont look to great either. There used to be brass but I think those look like steel.

I been using some rust converter last few years with pretty good luck on metal. Not sure its good enough for body paint but other areas paint sticks to it.

haha... looks like some more to do! when ever will I get this oil pan fixed firmly back on... painful because now is the best time to do it all but I just wanna drive the damn thing

Bought some rust converter, gonna treat those bits, then do those obscure coolant hoses, give me a couple of weeks and that pan might finally be on, said that a few weeks ago though!

Gonna get the garage to do my rusty petrol tank I reckon, dont fancy that in the flat and its not exactly dry these days.

Re: Rust on Mating Surface (Oil Filter Base)

Got the oil filter base off again today to get at those freeze plugs, no luck I'm afraid, they just look that bit too in-accessible. I've decided thats another job for another day. I plan to redo lots of coolant hoses plus new injectors so will take the intake manifold to get at all of this and then treat them from the top with the coolant pipe removed, seems much easier and I cant see how im gonna do a few of those hoses without removing the intake manifold anyway.

I did it. It took a half dozen different 1/4" socket extensions, a u-joint, new hose clamps and an afternoon perfecting my keyhole surgery technique, but I did it.
