Hoping someone knows a bolt size.

Ok, I have an 89 Accord LX. I was doing an oil change today when I noticed the plastic cover that bolts to the frame right next to the belts was loose. The bolt holding it in place is missing.

It’s a shot in the dark, but anyone know what size bolt I need for that?

I can go buy a few different sizes and try and get close if that doesn’t work, but thought I’d try here.

I have a picture, but can’t seem to post it here for some reason.

Anyways, if anyone happens to know, thanks for the help!

Update: I’ve tried M5, M6, and M7. No dice yet.

    Anyone?

If its for the plastic splashguard that runs round the underside of the front end, then all the bolts holding it in are the same, not sure on size, 5 or 6mm from memory with fat 10mm heads and fat built in washers. Theyre quite easy to spot if you have a look where the splashguard is mounted and they'll be your best reference.

It is, but this particular guard seems to cover the belts.

Going to do a trans drain and fill tomorrow so will see if a nearby bolt will fit.

I don't know exactly what this bolt is called but it will have a 10 mm head on it. Then it will have an integrated wide washer. Then it has a thicker unthreaded shaft for 3 mm and then the threads will be the same as all the other typical 10 mm bolts in the car.

If you get any kind of bolt that matches all the other 10 mm socket bolts and just put a big washer on it. it will hold it just fine.

That was the plan, but I couldn’t get them to start.

I’m going to swing by the auto parts store and see if I can match it up to an existing one.

Awesome. Thanks a lot. I thought I tried that size, but really need to get it up on ramps to get a better view.

Re: Hoping someone knows a bolt size.

Those are a specialty bolt with an integrated washer and a smooth shank spacer specially designed to hold the plastic guard securely without splitting it when you torque down the bolts.

It's an M6x13 and will be terrifically hard to find. Even if you succeed in finding one, it probably won't do you any good. Those holes see a lot of water, and even in ideal climates the threads rust and fail easily. You might have better luck with a fat, coarse-thread sheet metal screw.

Yeah I'm kind of wondering if there isn't a broken bolt in there and thats why you couldn't thread anything in... All of mine came out fine except for that exact same one... snapped

I don’t see one in there, but will take a closer look. Might just be better cutting the flapping plastic off and calling it a day.

Seems a little drastic when a coarse thread screw will work great. Still, I agree that some re-engineering is warranted. Getting that splash guard off seems to require a lot more effort than it should. Replacing the bolts with some quick-release snaps would be a vast improvement, but I haven't yet figured out how to make that work.

I just mean the piece that’s dangling in my original picture. Not the whole thing.

I took one of the other screws off that look just like one above. It sort of starts but immediately gets tight. If I put some pressure do it, I could probably get it to go. Maybe make way for the replacement.

I think I’m going to have to get a standard bolt and washer and perhaps install it with a powered driver.

After exhausting all other options, I went with the coarse thread screw. Worked like a charm.

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Believe it or not, most splitters are made out of plywood, unless you have a carbon fiber budget
