so i am asking the guys who know much about performance stuff and their prices to write a small FAQ about what can be done to a car with approx. prices so new people can decide the best thing for the buck !

thank you very much guys !
BTW there is a FAQ on turbo already so i am gonna merge it with this one once it's finished !

For peformance gains this is a later item you may not notice much more power but the engine will be smoother and should run better.
Before some major mods all I would suggest is an accel super coil (look in the faq for part number and install)
as for plugs NGK are the best and their wires are also good
I am partial to magnecor (sp) and crane cam fire wires.
Msd 6 series 100-250 on ebay is the best place higher prices may include coil

    wires
    NGK (20-30$) www.nopi.copm

    Nology hot wire (120-150$) www.nopi.com
    Plugs
NGK R plugs (1.25-2.5$ per plug) Autozone or any where on line
NGK Irridium Ix Plugs (about 10$ per plug) Ebay

Short ram EFI only (LXi EXi SEi) 92-95 civic intake (20-200$)
cut about 3-5 inches off filter end

    cold air
2.5 inch is the best diameter no widning of the hole
90-93 accord intake 4 cyl hole to fender may need to be widned

    Cams reground (provide own core)
Colt cams canada between (120-200$) 25 return shipping
Standard and tri flow both wild and mild. Both EFI and Carb
Power Triflow 10% depending on mods I think 7 % for regular

    Bullfrog cams ?
Open loop motor sports 150-200$ I think 20 buck return
7 horse and up I think both EFI and Carb

Just a suggestion, when writing this make sure it is clear. Too many damn people do not know how to write effectively.

You need to do it in steps, start with the easier mods.

    Do something like:

For the beginner, a quick and cost-effective way of adding a good dose of horsepower is to change the stock air-intake system. When working on this, you need to remember the engine is also like a large air machine. The more air it can push in; and, in return push out, the better the engine will run.

For changing the air system, you would need a short-ram or a complete Cold Air Intake (CAI).

There are advantages to doing both systems, each has their pluses and minuses. Here is a quick break down of each:

    Short Ram:
Description: The short ram is a short length of tube that comes directly off of the throttle body and has a cone filter attached to the end of it. It is (in our case) heading to the passenger side of the vehicle.
Plus: Easy installation, overall cheaper in most cases.
Minus: Less Horsepower than a full CAI
Minus: Possibly could damage brake lines if installed incorrectly

    Cold Air Intake:
Description: A full tube that runs from the throttle body to the passenger side front wheel well. This draws cold air from the bottom of the vehicle, in return causing more horspower.
Plus: Maximum amount of horsepower for the intake.
Minus: Harder to make and install.
Minus: Possibly can ingest water and clog motor.

Installation and Fabrication of Short Ram
A good way to make the short ram intake is by buying a 92-95 Civic intake. These are already fabricated for the vehicle, and mostly come with a filter. These can be found on eBay from anywhere between $20 to $200. You DO have to remove about 3-5" from the intake tube, but can be measured by placing it in your motor off of the throttle body and measuring it out. Take into account where it will go by the brake lines, you may have to place a protective covering over the lines or make a bracket so the intake does not touch.

Another possibility that can be done is installing a filter directly onto the throttle body. This can be done by purchasing a filter with a rubber coupler on it already and clamping it onto the throttlebody.

Link to 92-95 Intakes on eBay: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...5+Civic+Intake

Installation and Fabrication of Cold Air Intake
These are by far harder to make than a short ram intake, but definantly DO pay off.

A How-To on the subject has already been made:

If you would like more information on the differences in horsepower between a CAI and a Short-Ram intake, check out a post Jim made. With a true CAI you can get nearly 20 horsepower.

    Do something like that

hey, about the intake horsepower gain, i think it would me more significant than that, there was a thread somewhere on here that listed power gains on a civic b18c1 swap or something, and it pretty much came down to a 1.25:1 temperature to horsepower ratio, so basically i think when the lowered the temp 25 degrees they gained 20 horsepower, i would think it would be around the same for most somewhat modified cars, atleast with an exhaust or something
if junkyards didn't exist, neither would my car...

this also depends on supporting mods. if you have other mods first, like exhaust, header and or cam, you will gain substantially more than if you upgrade your intake first.

some cars gain up to 30whp just from an air intake (usually turbo cars).
im not disagreeing with you, because u are probably right, im just pointing out that there are higher potential gains if you have supporting mods, and you would likely see more than 2-4hp

Suggestions Performance Mods / Bolt Ons

If youre gonna add stuff that throws a code, you might as well spend the money for a good software tune to keep the codes out and tune the car for the performance mods youre having installed.
