    CV boot grease

So I have a couple boots that have some tears, the joints are fine just the rubber is old and worn out so they squirting grease.
Picked up some boot kits off rockauto cause they're way cheap and one of the kits you can tell is super old. Well really they're all old because they're all made in USA lol.
They all come with a pack of grease but this one kit that looks way older than the others (by the box, you can tell it's been sitting on a shelf for a while), has a packet of grease that is green. Now, I've never seen green grease before so I am bewildered... the grease just old and I shouldn't use it? Or is there a such thing as green axle grease?

Side note: The kits are old but the rubber boots are in surprisingly great shape, not dry rotted or anything.

    Thanks.

Id use it as long as the rubber is good. Give it a good test, twist it with your hands to see if you can get any dry cracks to show in the boot when you stretch it. The green grease is probably synthetic grease so its the high quality stuff. I have not known of oil or grease to go bad in a sealed container.

both outer ends are cracked and oozing, driver side got finished off when I pulled the axles the other day. The pass side inner boot is coming out from under the clamp so it flung grease everywhere, yay.

Replacing boots is a job I don't need to do a 2nd time. It was such a mess, I'll gladly buy the axles now. Kudos to you though.

Seriously, Rock Auto axles are cheap. Only time I'd mess with boots is if I was making a custom axle or putting high angle boots on and even then I would do everything I can to get around it (mostly because I'd need to do it every time I need an axle)

It might be easier to disassemble the joint from the shaft than to spread the boot around the whole joint. If that involves removing all the balls from the outer Rzeppa joint I would retract that statement though.

    Re: CV boot grease

Well the outer joint didn't want to come off the axle shaft so I switched sides and the inner join came off with one hammer strike so yay. Both ends needed to be replaced anyway. Just slid the outer boot down to the joint and all is well.
wasn't all that messy actually since most of the grease had been flung out lmao

nah, the outer joint you dont have to take apart completely, it can be hammered off but it's easier to take the inner join apart since it's only held captive by the boot itself and all that needs to be removed by force is the three prong looking thing (no idea what the official name for it is lol)

Pretty sure I threw my pants away after that job. There was no getting that grease out of them.
