    Rear Main Seal Replacement

I am so confused, every crank shaft I have seen has been above the oil pan cover. And every rear main seal I have seen has a cover around it held in by bolts. But this one is different then both of those. This crankshaft is half over the oil pan, and I don’t see a cover for the rear main seal. How would I replace this rear main seal? How would I take it out? If I take it out would a ton of oil spill out from the oil pan? Please help, thanks!

It seems to hold in there well enough without any assistance. To change it, just jam a screwdriver in (careful not to scratch the delicate housing) and pry it out. No oil spills out. The real struggle is in getting to the seal in the first place.

    Re: Rear Main Seal Replacement

Thank you so much for earlier.

I have a couple more questions though. Earlier I was just trying to see what it would be like getting it out, just kind of seeing how tight it is in there you know. But then I accidentally scratched the surface edge of the crankshaft, I didn’t scratch any seal surfaces or anything. Just kind of the corner edge on the left surface side of the crank, if that makes any sense. You might be able to see it on the above picture. It is pretty dang small, and just on that corner. I was wondering if that is ok or not.

Also, is there even a friccin pilot bearing for the flywheel and crankshaft. I took off the fly wheel and there was nothing there in that hole. The hole in the crankshaft doesn’t even look like it would serve any purpose for a pilot bearing to be there. Just wanna make sure because a lot of others cars have them, and it would be stupid to have to go back and fix that.
    Thanks!

Crank is steel... not super scratchable. If you can't feel it, chances are it won't hurt a rubber seal... The same does not go for your rod journals. If you can feel it and the scratch is where the seal sits then just take the edge down with some fine sand paper. I think you are saying its where the flywheel mates to it where it won't make a lick of difference.
Nope, no pilot bearing, doesn't need one.

What should I do about these 3 dot like things of a scratch that I had found after taking it off. Should I just use some sandpaper then?

They don't look too bad. You can sand them lightly if they're sticking up and sharp. I don't think they'll cause you any trouble. You can smear a little RTV in that spot to assist with the seal if you're really worried.
