Question H22 header?? Power adder advice.

Hi all, I'm dusting off my old 86 dx. Currently it's just back together, but just a bit slower than I can justify driving every day with a 75 mph turnpike. It's running a lightly modified a20a1 with a chineseium faux weber 38 swap, ngk plugs and wires, arp head studs and rod bolts, and a 10 thou shave on the head to get rid of some idiotic damage caused by bolting down a speedometer cable between it and the block :) . I was flipping through the forum and I found some references to modifying an h22 or eclipse header to fit, any info on that would be much appreciated.

I have actually never seen any posts about that. If you want to modify a header then about any one will work, but good luck because you will absolutely need a new flange, the a series has an odd spacing between the inside and outside cylinders, so nothing lines up.
The performance you will gain will be marginal at best though, though the only thing you have done that makes a meaningful performance difference so far is the weber. Try a cam regrind.

I had no idea that the exhaust spacing was so funny, but that makes sense with most things a20 related being kinda strange. I'll look into a cam, the car is an auto so I'm looking mostly for drivability and I had thought that a cam might eat into idle quality.

I have a 272 grind and it idles fine, albeit it sounds a bit lopey and sits at about 900-1000, but that it also partially due to the vacuum delete with the stock carb. It has no trouble staying at idle or taking off, even fully loaded with ac and headlights
Oh, another thing you could do is a better ignition coil and an MSD 6-A (or 6-AL or 7, but there is no need for any of their features and the digital MSDs are much less reliable). If you want drivability, spark is where you should look.

I'll check into that. I used to have one of the early digital MSD ignition boxes on a tbi squarebody, so I should still have one lying around somewhere. Thanks for the info.
