This is a pic of my new home theater system subwoofer. It is modeled after the HSU Research TN 1220HO subwoofer that I did not feel I could currently afford. Anyways, it is quite different than anything I have ever seen other than the speaker I modeled it after. (It kinda looks like a vertical Bazooka Tube also.)

The construction of the speaker was very easy but it took me quite a while to figure out what to use to make it. The body of the speaker itself is a 12.5" diameter concrete tube that people use to pour concrete pilings. The end caps and base are made out of 1" thick pieces of medium density fiberboard. The construction was pretty straight forward. I used a Roto Zip to cut the end caps and the mounting holes. The problem that I ran across is that not many companys sell just speakers to the public. The only place that I did find anything decent was at madisound.com and I didnt see anything that I really liked.

I settled on using a car speaker instead. The speaker I used was a Coustic CF 1044 10" Dual 4 ohm subwoofer. What makes this compatible with a home system is that it has dual 4 Ohm coils that I wired in series. This gives me the correct 8 ohms that I needed for my home system. Anyways, I tuned the enclosure at 50 hertz using a 7 inch piece of PVC. I bought all of the parts to build the enclosure at Home Depot and a fabric store less than $35 and the speaker itself cost only $99 from Circuit City (floor model) My total expenditure was less than $150. including the contact paper I bought from Meijers to cover the speaker.

I am only using the amp built into my home theatre (it has a dedicated low pass channel just for subs ) to power the sub and can tell you that it sounds totally awesome. I listened to my sub next to a $700 12" Velodyne powered sub and it totally blows that sub out of the water. My sub is kinda big but I don't care. It stands about 36" (30" tall inclosure) including the base and is 12.5" in diameter. I am running about 1.8 sq ft of air excluding the volume of the speaker itlself.

I just wanted to show you guys. I am pretty proud of my creation. The sub that came with the system had a 6" driver that sounded really sappy. I am really surprized at how crisp the sub sounds at volume. Anyways, here are a few pics of my creation.

Home theatre is so damn deep and complex and exciting... I'm just barely starting to get into it, but I'm looking into doing a subwoofer as one of my first projects.

I HIGHLY recommend the latter page because they deal pretty much strictly in home audio, but they have a car audio department too and their subs just kick ass, plain and simple.

that is really nice, and very clean, i've always wanted a sub for my home theater, but its pretty exp. if you know what i mean. i've thought of building my own sub, but thats pretty complex as well. But you've got me thinking into making one....
