Lightbulb rear Disc Conversion IS IT REALLY NEEDED?

alright, I wana convert to rear Discs on my 87 LXI hatch. from what I read on the how to, I need SEI rear Controll arms and all atached hardware. Calipers. controll arms, brake Lines. blah blah blah.... know it says I need to upgrade the master Cylinder, and rotors and such..... ok.

Master cylinder from the SEI or what???

Bigger rotors and Calipers??? Thats ALOT to change. heh, for just the Rear discs. is it A MUST???? or just a sugestion?????

A must, well no. Will it improve braking performance, yes. Car makers add them on to their hotter FWD cars for a reason. But if you don't plan on pushing your car much, you've got allot less of a reason. Oh course they do look cooler, not being sarcastic, cause they really do make the car look nicer. If you want to improve braking performance with out doing the rear disk swap, get brembo front disks (maybe do the 88-89LXI front brake swap) and high performance pads like EBC or Axxis. I got a big improvement that way, so much so that I moved rear disk's from must have NOW, to a latter date.

rear drums make your car look crappy, cheap, and low performance IMO.

You will never get really good braking performance out of the drums, if you switch to rear disks you can upgrade those to go along with the front.

who makes a kit to upgrade the rear discs? also you shouldn't have to change the master cyl. just the proportioning valve. I have a hatch and they are different then a sedan. I bought a sedan front caliper from the junkyard, rebuilt it, then found out it didn't fit. it looks like all the hatches are the heavy duty front brakes.

No one makes a rear disk brake upgrade, you make it by pulliing the parts off a SEI model at the junk yard.

    86-87 LXI's have smaller front brakes than 88-89 LXI's.

Your comment on the master cyl makes sense, I wonder if it's the same part#, if not I'd say you do need to pull it.

    Does Honda remanufacture parts?

Could you order some OEM replacements?

No, not really. You can get an aem rear upgrade kit. That is if you already have rear discs though.

Both hubs, calipers, brake lines(some junkyard cut em to drain fluids), e-brake cables, master cylinder, proportioning valve, and rotors.

You really don't need the whole trailing arm, but if its the same price just get it. It might have better bushings since its two years newer than yours.

I don't think so. The sei rear brakes are closer to the90-93 tegs. The 1st gen tegs use a bar to tie the two wheels correct? I think that would make it more complicated.

I doubt they would have the knuckle assembly. If they did it would probably cost as much as the car.

As far as evrything else, it should be easily had at a local dealer. The question would be, are you really willing to pay that much for new parts?
