    Backfire sound?

I recently gutted my catatlyic converter and cut off my muffler. I still need to weld on some more pipe to get the exhaust out from under the car. But I get this backfire sound going on. It sound like some damn kid just kit my car with a rock. Also it usally does it when I shift or let off the accelerator. It will do it random. Sometimes it does it every 5 mins and other times maybe only a few times a day.

You could have bad plugs (could be part of the problem)

I figured that it was running to lean because of bad plugs, but I haven't had time to check. I'll check it today too see but I'm pretty sure that it is my plugs.

I can't figure it out. It ran fine untill I gutted the cat and cut off the muffler. My friend has a gutted cat on his 88 and has no problems.

Yes I know that backfireing is caused by the air/fuel mixture, but the thing is that it ran perfectly fine untill I gutted the cat and cut off the muffler. I don't see how doing that will mess up the air/fuel mixture. Also my friends 88 is a carb. (Lx)

it changes the air flow. if the airflows different your mixture is different. I've seen so many people mess with intake and exauhst and not touch the carb. I can't explain it the best but im sure the carb gurus can

Ok thanks I'm still kind of lost on how the exhaust can mess up the air/fuel, but I'll try and mess with the air/fuel mix to see if I can fix it.

i have an 88 LX-i with a gutted cat and 2.25 from the cat back to an OBX muffler, and i get the same popping sound when i let off or shift, i think mine is due to an exhaust leak, because its nowhere near as loud as a back fire, but more of a popping coming for the exhaust, not like a glass pack 'cackles' when gearing down, but just a random pop when letting off or shifting.
