Is it safe to take just the vacuum advance off of my distributor?

I need to take just the vacuum advance off of the distributor to get at a bolt to take off the thermostat housing. Will i mess anything up like my timing or something?

you usually cant get off the advance mechanism without messing the distributor up or taking alot of time. Just remove the distributor... for you its 3 bolts but before you remove it, scribe a line across the distributor mount and the head so you dont mess with your timing
