There are 2 strips about 4"x1/2" on the roof above the rear doors. What are these for and how do they detach? Just seem like rust collectors to me!

If I remember correctly, that's where the roof is welded to the side piece. It will pup up with a small screwdriver, and I'm pretty sure there was a weld under there.

Of course you don't really have to worry about them if you shave them.
Be carefull about shaving them. That is a flex point. If you bondo them shut they will probably crack. You should weld them over for the best results, but even then they could crack.
