Axles: 5speed vs auto. are they the same?

can I get a quick confirmation on whether the 5-speed and automatic axles are different or not? (concerning EFI models). I did a search and only found a reference as to the passenger side ones being the same but the driver's side ones are different. Can anyone give me a confirmation on this? Thanks.

The driver's side is different so you have to use the right one but the passenger side is the same so any will be okay.

has anybody tried using the auto axle for the 5 speed? I mean its only .2 inches longer? Couldnt the inboard joint take up the slack?

I wouldn't want to risk damaging either CV, or having the snap ring on the inner get pulled out or pushed in too far. Those things have to be at just the right spot to seal all the tranny oil in. When it comes to precision, .2 inches is alot!

Don't cheap out. I did the conversion as well and I would rather drive my car with the piece of mind I did it right than worry if the wrong size axle will ever cause any problem.

Does the car you're getting the tranny and other parts off of have a bad axle or something??

well heres the thing, my honda mechanic friend had a very very nice lxi 5 speed tranny that i got, and im getting the rest of the parts for swap from Gregstoofast, but i still need a clutch, drivers side axle and 5 speed starter and probably some misc crap but we will see. I checked at the auto parts store on the corner and they can order me an axle and it will cost $60, and $62 core charge, so ill just give them my axle, they wont know the difference.
