i notice that most people run caps with their subs. is it a worthwhile upgrade? how much difference does it make?

its worth while (IMO) if your running over 500w. It will make a significan't (and IMO noticable) difference over 500 or so but I wouldn't pay for one unless i go hardcore competition style

It's a temporary fix for the lack of power from your altenator, the smart and right move would be to upgrade it at the source of the problem, the altenator......

well thats one reason people use them but it also makes the amp's power supply stiffer and so it tightens up your bass and lets the amp put out more power at peak transients
