    i'm new to this

    what's up i'm kinda new to the board so bare with me.
    i own a '89 accord lxi. and for a 4 cylinder this car has good take off. but there is something that concerns me. as from what i'm told the 86-89 engine's are'nt "interference" engine. but today i took off the timing belt cover it looked brand new and no oil spot's. i check for play it has some, i start it up and one side of the belt is moving with like a vibration/wobble type moving(back and forth) more than the other side.
    i do plan to change it but it look's new so any suggestion would help.

    you could try adjusting the belt tension if you feel it is to loose,...especially if you think its a new one on it,...maybe it wasn't tensioned right

    it is spring loaded yes but there is a bolt that sort of adjust the position of the tensioner to apply more force. or I could have been dillusional when I replaced my timing belt... in either case I'll double check for ya.

    loosen the adjuster bolt,on the tensioner,then turn the crank clockwise by hand at least 3 teeth on camshaft,then tighten adjuster, the tension on the belt between cam and crank, should be reasonably firm when pushed with your hand

    How long has the car gone without a timing belt change? My belt was whipping around like that and I found the best way to take care of it was to replace it.

    They are interferance engines. Timing belt maintenance is VERY important.

    i was wondering how you determin how new the timing belt is on these cars i just bought one and i dont know the condition of the belt on it
    wow i never would have thought that you had all this info in one spot

    It's best to just replace the belt if you're unsure of it's condition. If the belt goes your engine may destroy itself (psitons and valves don't tolerate colliding with each other very well).

    The Honda service manual says to inspect for wear here (in red circle below). When our timing belts fail it's usually the teeth that break off so check for cracks along the side of the teeth. If the belt is soaked with oil or has cracks along the teeth it should be replaced.

    For those of you with service manuals, the original version of this diagram is on page 6-20.

    well it does'nt have the honda trademark on it. but the car has 146k on it. beside's you can still see the lettering on the belt.

    it's an intereference engine ! when you belt goes out your engine could too !so better replace i and buy piece of mind !

    i'l do that since it's only $25. but i have something more important to discuss. my fuel filler line is rusted so when i go to put in gas some goes out . i have an recall and honda is going to replace it but that's in two week's though. is there any way to take care of this 'til i go to honda?

    Just check if there are any rust near the filler opening. I think there's a recall on this, so if you're up to it, you can call honda or bring your car there for a free checkup.

    "fuel filler line" is a big prob for carb engines. Duno bout EFI. Anyway after recall, clean up whole fuel system from tank to injectors..

    but in the mean time what am i suppose to do. just go to the gas station and fill up as 20% of my gas end's up on the ground?
    honda told me it may take two week's to get the new part.

    20% of two weeks gas is probably cheaper than much of any real fix before the dealer installs the new part. Maybe duct tape would hold up for the couple times you'll fill up before then.

    i called honda yesterday and they said the part was in so hopfully on tuesday it'll be fixed. :super:
    to bad this could'nt be fixed before my fuel filter's got fucked up.

    i took care of the recall on my car and let me tell you evryone was right 'bout honda there service was great
    i had one guy at my school saying that i'm gonna be there so i might as well not go to school.
    and another was saying it's gonna take a while (bout three hour's) but i went at 7am was in getting setteld at 7:20, car was on a lift at 7:30, car was out on a test drive by 8:15.i made it to school by 8:50am.
    so that really changed my mind 'bout honda's,plus it was a ford/honda dealership. there were more ford's there than honda's/acura's put together.
    the surging is still there but not as bad as it used to be.
    i'm gonna change the fuel filter tomarrow and see what happen's.
