All righty, but I'm gonna use a example of a size you can use, 225/40-18's won't work on a 3g.

    215/35-18

215='s the tire's width in mm

35='s the aspect ratio. It is a ratio of your tire's width to sidewall height. So the higher the number is, the taller the tire will be cause the ratio of sidewall height to thread width goes up. As a example.

    215/35-18 vs 225/40-18

The 215/35 has a sidewall that is 3" tall. The whole tire has a diameter of 23.9"

The 225/40 has a sidewall that is 3.5" tall. The whole tire has a diameter of 25.1"

When you to go wider to tires, they also get taller, even if the "40" doesn't change, it's part of that aspect ratio. So a 215/40-16 tire is taller than a 205/40-16 tire. Even though the 40 did not change, the width did and that's part of the ratio that sets the sidewall height.

Here's a good site to plug in your stock tire size and see how close, or how far off a given size is in comparision.

BTW, offset is the rim measurement where we know where the rim is, in relationship to a imaginary centerline. So take 40mm. If you go down to say 35mm you just moved the rim closer to the fender lips by 5mm. The oppisite is true if you use 45mm instead of 40mm, that moves the rim 5mm closer to the inside of the car.

www.discounttiredirect.com has a really good explanation in either their FAQ section or in the customer service link.

    Size
Wheel & Tire Package 1 Wheel & Tire Package 2 Wheel & Tire Package 3 Wheels (each)
    17x7.5 $1099
    (205/40/17) $1150
    (215/45/17) $1199
    (235/45/17) $199
    18x7.5 $1399
    (225/40/18)
    (215/35/18) $1450
    (235/40/18) $1499
    (245/40/18) $225
    19x7.5 $1999
    (225/35/19) $2050
    (235/35/19) $2199
    (215/35/19) $340

OK THEN....I wanna get 18's for a 99-2002 Jetta......and I want the tires like viewing from the side to be SMALL.....so I think package 1 with the size of 225/40/18 would suit me right? And also, i was looking at other jettas on cardomain....and the guy had this same size with diff. rims.......and I think it looks good....so I guess this will do...THANX MAN!!!! THATS GONNA SAVE ME $100!! hehe
