Drum Thunking
Last year I replaced my rear drums and installed new shoes at the same time. Now, my brakes in the rear are going thunk thunk thunk when I stop. Do you guys think they just need some adjustment? They haven't been touched since they were installed, it is only doing it on the left hand side. Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you.

the exact same thing just happened to my car...how do the drums all of a sudden become oval?

LOL anchovies u r funny guy. Nope, didn't hit anything. Also, problem does not occur when I use my hand brake to stop. Any thoughts?

You need to jack it up and take off the drum to check. Maybe the shoes are off or something.
going to see uncle who's a mechanic this weekend. I'll get him to throw it up on his hoist he has at home. have to do timing belt and water pump and tie rod ends anyways. will see it then

that's just weird... I bought new drums and pads for my car, and right after that it started thunking... I had the drums checked and they seem just fine...
just to make sure the problem was in the back, I disabled them and the thunk stopped... of course I had to make them work again cause the sucker doesn't stop well with just front brakes
let me know if you figure out what's wrong, cause it's probably the same thing wrong with mine.
87 hatch (stolen)
88 lxi 4dr, 5spd, threw a rod... in process of swapping engine from my 87 hatch (police recovered what was left of the car).

My 88 LX has the same problem, but on the RH side......According to specs, the shoes are worn & the drum ovaled due to overheating. I just bought this car this, so assume the last owner did a few too many panic stops to cause this. Am replacing rear brakes (drums, shoes & hardware) this Friday (22/08/03), as the hardware is all rusty too.
My car does this too I have done all I can figure except replace all the componets. Did putting new shit on there fix it or what, cause this is anoying ass hell?

Well I just replaced both Rear Drums, Shoes & all the Hardware. Now the "Thunking" is gone. I had a noise from the right rear, after measuring found that the drum was "Out of Round". This was the cause of the "Thunking". Just make sure you lubricate the backing plate too. I had to re-install the shoes twice, as the first time they were not seated right, so the drum wouldn't go on.
