check the belts, check the trans and engine fluid levels.
Look around the engine for any leaks.

ya what the funny thing is I just bought some stp fuel system cleaner and now i get 270 miles a tank instead of my old 190 something, If I would have knew that all i had to do was spend 10 dollars on some liquid to clean the injectors i would have done it when i first got the car!!!

Yea 280,000 miles on the stock cat. Those stupid things can really smell bad. It is probably getting plugged.

You're not burning the fuel properly... or you're not getting the right fuel mixture.

yeah Im still running the original carb, is the valve cover gasket the thing that keeps the oil from getting out cause if so I have already replaced that so I dont think that is the problem.

I have a carbie and it makes the burning smell you described, I think it comes from the motor leaning out while driving hard

if it smells like burning matches (or rotten eggs) thats more like a sulpher smell and that indicates that the cat is going out. Ever get behind a car and it smells like a load of rotten eggs just got dumped? Thats the indication that the cat is going/gone. Punch it out and your problem is solved! (unless you have DEQ inspections of course....)
