    Auto Shifter not Unlocking?

Ok, this just started happening yesterday on my SE-i. I turn the car on and the shifter won't unlock, I have to turn the car off, put the key in the auto unlock on the shifter move it to N and then back to P, turn the car on and I can shift into drive. If i shift back into park I have to repeat the process to unlock it again. Any ideas?

I don't know how the 86-89 autos are , but on my 91 there is a solenoid that only lets you shift when you have your foot on the brake pedal.

Maybe thats bad or stuck on yours.

yeah makes sure there is power going to the shift lock solenoid. You can always use your key and manually unlock it. Are you sure you didn't tug the wire out by accident or blew a fuse to that wire?

I'm curious too, I'm wondering how these damn shiftlocks really work.

I think it's hooked to a yellow wire, or it might be a green wire... anyways. when the car is on the solenoid is energized pulling a lever and release the lock. If you take off the plastic case that surrounds the shifter you will see a brass colored box with I think a single wire coming off of it. Turn the key on and watch it work... or in Hostiles case. not-work.

I'd say check the sliding switch on the drivers side of the shifter for loose wires and connections as well as the shift release solenoid on the passenger side.

I didn't take the dash off, but did have the bottom under the steering wheel and the guage cluster off recently.

you mean the rear defroster button, or flip-up light swithc, or dimmer switch?

sometimes without those accessory buttons in other things wont work.

I took the shifter apart and couldn't find anything loose. I put it back together and it works fine. Oh well, least it's working.
