Fuel Level Sending Unit Replacement

Hi Guys:

I believe I have a problem with my fuel level sending unit (not the fuel pump). The service manual states that I need a special tool to remove the sending unit. Have any of you replaced this part without the stated special tool? Unlike the fuel pump, which is anchored by a dozen 10mm nuts, the fuel level sending unit must be untwisted with a tool.

Any help is appreciated.

Thats strange, cant use some kind of big vise-grip or pliers to get that off?
