yes... it will improve horsepower... the bigger the pipe the easier it is for the exhaust gas to escape... which will lower back pressure to improve performance... especially in the high rpm range.
    87 hatch (stolen)

88 lxi 4dr, 5spd, threw a rod... in process of swapping engine from my 87 hatch (police recovered what was left of the car).

the fucker that sold me the 88 is lucky he lives 500 miles from me...

also... you might want to consider converting from carb to fuel injected... the fuel injected engines make about 15-20 extra horses than the carbed.

don't convert to efi, the webber is awsome. anything bigger than 2.25 without series mods will actually hurt performance. 2.25 is a good size.

Ya, thats true, but you never want to go too big, because then you will lose all back presure and this will cause you to lose almost all low end power. I just ordered myself a pacesetter cat-back with 2.25" mandrel bent piping. I can't wait.

To some who care about getting their dollar's worth out of a custom exhaust, it may be seriously important. If they are just going to machine bend the pipe, you are losing that 2.25 pipings purpose around the bends. Restriction, like a kink in a water hose, it not what you would want from performance is it? Choking the chicken.

Word around the board is that with 98 hp, mandrel bends won't make much of a difference. Plus I don't have the money for the extra cost.

Well if thats the case then why did you even bother upgrading? Is it for the sound?

I mean, there won't be much difference between regular bending and mandrel bending. It will definitely be more power than stock.

You don't sound to informed based on that comment about the differences between mandrel and bent. But hey, its your car and your money.

uhh... no carb will outdue a fuel injection system... don't listen to the webber crazed morons...

if you can afford it... convert to fuel injection... if not, the webber is probably the next best thing, so just stick with that. but if power is what you want, the fuel injection system is what you need.

It was posted a week or two ago. I'm gonna call tomorrow to see if they can mandrel bend. Not everyone does it. If not, I'll call other places but if the price is a lot more, then I'll have to pass. By the way, the rest of my motor is stock. This is my start at performance mods.

yeah dont listen to the FI crazed morons. weber kicks ass. you can do a lot more things with it as well. or you could just put the crappy ass FI on it and not be able to fine tune like the weber can.!! you can also get bigger jets for it if you want. the weber is just as good if not better. i say better but it depends on what you want to do with the car.
