its the CV joint and the boot. what normally happens is the boots gets a rip or crack and all of the grease flys out and dirt gets in. that drys out the joint and it goes bad.

you can replace the joint itself, but i think it is easier (and usually cheaper) to just replace the entire axle. the auto parts stores here charge $60-$80 for a new axle

i would replace the whole axle instead of replacing eh joints. the axle will run you less then $100 plus lifetime warrenty, save the damaged axle and take it back the autozone/kragen for core credit est $10-15.

    not much, its pretty easy.

    remove the axle nut
    drain the trans fluid
unbolt and remove the shock fork thingy
seperate the ball joint from the lower control arm
swing the hub aside and slide the axle out of the hub
then pop the axle out of the transmission.

    to install you have to

    pop new axle in transmission
swing the hub assembly back in, putting the axle inside it
    bolt up the ball joint
re install the shock fork thingy
    fill up trans fluid
    and install new axle nut.

the hardest parts are removing the axle nut and poping the ball joint out.

I have no clue when mine were done, if ever. I'm just filing this in my brain for future reference. On another note, but maybe related (??), when I brake hard or take off, I hear a pop sound. Any ideas?

does it sound like it is coming from both sides or just one?

It sounds like the driver's side, but I have a hearing problem, so I could be wrong.

my guess is it is either your brakes sticking to to the rotor or a ball joint.

let me ask, say if you are just going down the road at like 30mph and you floored the gas. would it still pop?

I started noticing it after my brakes were done, as a matter of fact. I hope it's not a balljoint... I just got the rear driver's side a few days ago and that's going in on Wednesday. That's all I need is to have another go

you don't have to replace the whole thing but it's better if you do.If you decided not to you can buy a bering kit for your axel. the problem with this is the kits don't always line up properly. replacing the axel, is farly quick but make sure that you have a oil pan when you pry out the old axel. good luck

so it hapens after you brake hard to complete stop, then release the brake and go. is that right?

if that is the case it has something to do with the brakes. I dont know what tho.

Well recently I just floored the gas when I was going about 20mph and it popped. So I dunno. There is no rattling or any noise from the balljoints up in front (I know what it sounds like).

ok then i dont think it is the brakes. now i am thinking it could be a engine or tranny mount. it is really hard to know what it is without looking at it
