    Clear (88-89) corners

OK, I'm thinking about getting off my lazy ass and making some clear corners. I know I already told a member (who shall remain anonymous) that I'd make him a set.

Anyway, if I were to make these, they'd be available in clear (like the ones pictured below). I can also replace that clear with red, green, blue, or smoke tinted as well, but that's only if enough people are interested in one particular color.

IF i decide to make these, they would not be cheap. They'd be about 75 per set. The colored/smoked ones would be about another 5-10. I know this seems expensive to some, but after factoring in the cost of corners (in very good shape) from the j/y, cost of materials, and the amount of hours (about 4-6 hrs. per set), I'm really not making any money on the deal.

As always, I'll donate a set amount per set to the board.

IF you guys are interested, please let me know. Please don't just whore up this thread though.

    Thanks guys!

I'd pay $45 tops for them.

Knock yourself out! Good luck even finding a stock pair in decent condition at a junkyard for $30. But thanks anyway for posting.

Hey mark are those in the last pic smoked corners and then clear? Or is it just a dark pic? I think it would be tight to have the corner smoked; and have the blinker part that was orange, clear.

Nah Mike, the last pic is the same lens as in the first 2, just a darker pic. That's a good idea about the smoked corner and clear insert, but a ton of work. I have not yet mastered custom fabbing the whole lens yet, so for now, only the marker is clear and the rest is stock.

PS> If I finally do figure out how to do the whole lens, with an OEM quality as these clears are (IMO), then I'll also do the plastic headlight lids to match. But that's a long ways away.

Does anyone think my price is unfair? Just curious. I already know of a member here who thinks my price is rediculous.

I think the price is fair b/c of the amount of work involved in making them. And for all those people that think its an unfair price, why don't you just go to the store and buy new corners :lol

And I think that people should respect his price, if he says $75 you shouldn't insult him with a low ball price offer.

I did, I found a pair at a junkyard for $10 and they're on my car now, no cracks, no scratches, perfect condition. I wasn't whoring up your thread, I'm just giving you a price that I (as a potential buyer) would pay.

oh yeah, and would they come with an amber bulb?

Sure, I could do that amber bulb no problem. Those are only about $2 at AutoZone. That's not a bad idea, and keeps the lenses legal to have. (Thanks for the advice on that one.)

Just an idea though about the supplies needed for the lenses, and what goes into making them....

    Silicone glue
    plastic cement
    plexi
    lighting tile
    chrome spray paint
    brass polish

and that's just the materials needed. After that, there's many hours spent making the lenses, setting them, prepping the housings, and putting it all back together cleanly so as to keep that OEM quality look.

All of the tints (red, blue, green) and the smoked are only in replacement of the clear in the pics I posted. Basically, instead of using clear material, I'll use colored, or smoked.

hmm...... That I'm not too sure of. If you just want the smoked orange, why not just use vht niteshades and smoke out the original ones. I suppose I can just smoke out the inside of the lens so that it looks more original and will not scratch off. But I'd end up using niteshades on that too. Any particular reason why you want the smoked orange? Just curious.

Yeah, I think he just wants to keep it legal. But, you will be fine with using orange bulbs with the clear lense or smoked lense. As long as the bulb is amber cops won't mess with ya.

If it's all about keeping it legal, all you'll need is the amber bulb. Many new cars today are doing just that from factory. New cars are coming with clear turn signal lenses, but have amber bulbs. You should not have anything to worry about the smoked lens not allowing the light to show through as well, b/c I chrome out the inside of the housings so that they are much more reflective then the original housings were. That just makes the light seem brighter so it'll show through the lens better.

i think, and this is just me, that your price is ridiculous... since your just modding some OEM ones, you should just have people send you thier corners, and then you mod them, because anybody who pays more then 30-40 bucks for them is an idiot, clear corners for my car are as low as 10 bucks in some places... just giving my opinion

I was just about to ask what the price would be if we were to send you our corners.

If I used yours, it could certainly cut that cost a bit, but paying for the OEM corners is not the only expense. The other expenses are the materials needed to do the clear lens, and the sheer amount of time put into each set. It's not really that difficult to mess up when cutting the original lens, so there's a possibility that I would have to use another corner to get a good set.

It's just easier this way. Carless --> It's true that for just about any other car out there, you can get corners real cheap. That's b/c some major aftermarket company decided to pay a plastic molding company $10K+ to build a mold and mass produce other lenses. It's only as a result of that major production order that they are able to offer the lenses so cheap now. There's no-one sitting in their workshop spending 4-6 hand modding a set.

Trust me, I know that the price is not like that of a 2G 'Teg. But I'm not trying to compete with them. Hell, I just got off the phone with a plastic injection molding company, and got a price quote of 3,000 for each mold (1 needed for each side), plus the cost of material for each lens made. And the minnimum volume they'll produce is 100 per run. So yeah, even then, the only way that price per unit is gonna bring the retail price (per pair) down to 15-20 is if I have 1-2000 made per run. That's not going to happen, so I make due with what I've got within my price range.

Thanks for the support on this one Jay.

Actually since the majority response to this thread has been negative, I'm deciding not to offer these. If someone is VERY interested, and willing to pay what I detailed above, then I'll try and accomodate their request. Otherwise, what many of you don't realize is that although I don't live my life on the idea that "time is money", I also can't justify spending many hours on one project and make only $2-3 from it. As it is, if I'm lucky only about $15-20 of that would have made it to my pocket.

Don't worry though, next time I make a set, I'll be sure and take plenty of pics and spend a couple hours putting together a how-to with pics for anyone who wants to try this themselves. Look for that in about a month.

    Later guys.

I think they look nice, specially on your car. The clears go good with your white car. I think $75 is reasonable price for what you have to do. I'd get a pair, but I don't think they would look good on my color of car. Keep up the good work man.
