Before I go through the work to see if I can fashion one to the 3g, are these things useful for anything besides beheading roadkill? Or would this be something worthwhile to do?

my buddy had a 5/8" lower strut bar on his Jetta and it was KILLER.
How are you gonna make one? I thought those were made out of spring steel or something and had to be bent in a bunch of different places to work right........

He's talking about a strut bar (not really the right name but it seems to be in common use) not a swaybar. Its used to tie the suspension arm mounts together to keep them from flexing. I've never taken a close look at the way the 3g control arms mount, but if it looks like connecting them together would make the chassis more rigid then it can hurt.
These links will take you to pics of the rear bar on my nova. Toyota though it was worth while to add it to the fx-16 and chevy felt that it was worth while to carry it over to the nova twin-cam. Its just a slightly bent steel tube thats been flattened on both ends, would be very easy to fabricate.

The tie bar is the closer black bar in the pics, the one in the back is my monster 3/4" rear swaybar.
