I am trying to change the timing belt and I can not get the crankshaft pulley off because it keeps turning, how can i get that off. Is there a special tool? Please help, thanks.

if you have a 5spd make sure its in gear, that should lock it ip so you can break it loose
You need a special tool from Honda that locks the pulley.

I ended up buying an impact wrench from Checker for $60 and I think it was worth it. Just that the electrics are huge.
Ya gotta put it in fifth and have someone hold the brakes down. That's how I get the bolt loose. Once you break it the first time, it's a cinch every other time.Originally posted by My Cousin Vinny

An electric may not break it loose. I rented one the first time I did the T-belt and it wouldn't budge that bolt. You can use the electric to put the bolt back on.
I am still a big fan of slipping a guy $5 to break it loose at the shop, but if the car is immobile that's not really practical.

well my motors out of the car and unbolted form the tranny and i even tried a impact gun and it wont budge free any more sugestions?
take the flywheel off, and put two of the bolts half way back in, get a piece of pipe, and have your buddy hold it between the bolts so the crank doesnt turn. if you have the engine in a stand, you should be able to lock the pipe against one of the runners that bolts the stand onto your engine. then get a big freakin' breaker bar and just go to town on that crank pulley bolt. dont worry about hurting anything, it will break loose like this. if you still cant manage it, slip a long pipe over the breaker bar and use leverage. lol, leverage is your friend

Are you talking about the electric impact gun? Well, as I said earlier, that's not going to do it. It takes the torque of a shop quality air impact wrench to do it. Since your motor's out of the car I guess you should try the suggestions of others on this board or see if you can actually rent a compressor and air impact wrench.well my motors out of the car and unbolted form the tranny and i even tried a impact gun and it wont budge free any more sugestions?
I still can not get the pulley off!!!!!!!! I can't get the crank pulley from moving when I put alot of pressure on the wrench with the pipe on the end. What can I do, the timing belt is not on the engine![]()

OLDSCHOOL did you find out about that tool that will lock the pulley in palce??? I have an 89 lxi 5 speed manual.
This is gonna sound stupid but.... rotate the crank till #1 piston is at bottom dead center, or thereabouts and valves are closed for that cylinder. Then remove the sparkplug and find a piece of rope or heavy cord. Put the rope into the cylinder, make sure some of the rope is hanging out so that it can be removed. Hopefully as the piston rotates upwards it will stop and then you can get the bolt loose. I've never done this, only remember someone else mentioning it.

Get a good pry bar that will fit into your flywheel\timing window, and get ahold of a FW tooth, (left side). It must grab good enough to stop the pully. Dont use normal sockets if you plan to do it manually, Impact grade only. 17mm socket, have a buddy hold the pry bar so it makes contact with the manafold and secures the flywheel in place. Hopefully you have a good pry bar\wrench setup you keep. Then rip it a new one. good luck,

Whatever method you use, first hit the bolt several times with a big hammer. This will lower the effort needed to break it free.
