Custom Intake, My Idea

for us guys with the carb. engine, we dont have many options for nice 3.in bent aluminum tube intakes like the FI engine. ive thought of getting an old civic intake box thingy and modding that because the bottom base is plastic. but every time i look at one, its messed up somehow, or if i go back to get it, its gone. so i havent had luck with that. anyway, since im good with making things out of plexiglass, i thought i could make something like that. my design would be a low profile rectangular box to fit on top of the carb, then have to "arms" comming out of the left and right sides with filters on the ends. then where they are positioned, have hood vents for a ram air type system. then the second option would be haveing those arm things go down into the fenders for a cai. either way, it would be a cai. i can also do this made from metal. i am taking a welding class at school and they will let you have your own projects. for the arms i could have flex tube, or bent pipe. so, sound good? with our cars, you have to emprovise, which i would be doing. as for those hood vents/scoops, i wanted to turbo style ones. i think JCW.com has them.

oh, i forgot, i wasnt going to used regular plexiglass. i realy mean just some black plastic if i could find it. ill have to see if it would melt onto the carb.

Get the tall WRX style ones since they have the height you need to get air that far back on the hood. I still need to raise my hood scoop 1" to get enough air to make my scoop really useful.

BTW adding a second arm on the right side of the carb would cause it to hit the flaot screw and possobly the float vavle... if you went over the float screw and valve then you'll make the project much harder and decrease the intake height even more on the right side.

ill have to draw a picture so you can get the idea. maybe ill get to that tomorrow. just a quick question, does my flipped lid realy do more good that haveing it regular? with the intake hose into the fender, stock? i dont know if its all im my head that it gives more power or does it? seems to, but needs colder air than hot engine air.

only issue with a "true CAI" is, and correct me if I'm wrong, it's that a carb does not really like real cold air. It's got a ton of moving parts, and needs a moderate to warm air to be really happy. With a carb, it's not neccessarily the temp of the air, it's just how much air. The more, the merrier. RAM AIR all the way.

Actually the carb has very little moving parts... it runs off of vacuum though... about the hot air... really cold air will cause the fuel to turn into dropplets and puddle in the intake manifold instead of flowing to the cylinders.

normally hot air will help vaporize the fuel
but once the fuel and the intake manifold heats up you no longer need hot air.

like A20 stateed...when the car gets warmed up so does the manifold thus making the need for the intake to pull in hot air usless...so when its warmed up and you are driving it the cold air works just the same as an F.I. car would...

i realy think a ram air type set up would work best instead of an in the fender intake. i was realy wanting to make it so the intake ends, which can be open if i use a filter right on top of the carb or have filters on them, would be near the top of the hood. then i would put scoops there infront of them to get the ram air effect. i wanted a turbo style scoop for the hood. 2 actually. kinda like this one on JCW.com

how about using one of those vacuum actuated ram air scoops like they use on hotrods? The ones that open up when the throttle opens up wide. That way its down unless you're carb opens up a little. I saw them install it on TNN TRucks once and i bet it could be used on your carb cars too. It would look pretty sweet IMO.

If you want to make it out of abs plastic you can go to the Home depot and buy some drain pipe and a paint can with a lid. then go to an automotive paint suply store and buy a can of Methel Ethel Keytone (MEK). pour about 2 Inches of MEK into the botom of the paint can and cut the pipe up into 1 inch sections and put it in the can and cap the can tightly. add more of the pipe untill the black goo in the bottom of the can is of the consistancy that you can work it with out creating bubles in it, but not so thin that it runns all over the place. You now have raw ABS plastic that you can form into the shape that you want. the MEK will evaporate when left to the open air and the abs will be as hard as it was before melting it down.
