    making koin reds adjustable

I just got an email back from Gordon at koni. I believe that Jim has listed this at least once before but this is what he said when i set him an email aking about customizing the Koni Reds.

This will make those that lost out kick themselves real hard.

    Mike,

    >how much it would cost to have them revalved, shorted and adda n external rebound adjuster

The revalve would cost $100/each and an additional $25/each to change the piston rod to make it externally adjustable. To shorten them would be based on the shop labor rate of $70/hour with each shock taking about an hour to do. Please note that this can be done at any time, new or used, as long as the body of the shock is not bent.

    >I have been told and have read that it is possible to have a adjusting valve add the extrenal of the strut.

I'm not sure what you are referring to here. The shocks can be converted to be externally adjustable for rebound (with the $25 rod during the rebuild) and can be converted to a double adjustable (compression and rebound adjustable separate) for $300/each. Unless you're racing the car though it may not be worth the effort for making them double adjustable. If you have any other questions, please write back and let me know. Thanks.

    Gordon

Now the question at the end that he wasnt sure what I was referring to was the external adjuster that could be added.

I believe that I will have to save a little more than planned but if it can be done at any time maybe Ill just have them shortened for now and see how it rides.

    Mike

Damn that is sweet. I would love to have them adjustable and be shortened 1/2". That would be prime. I just orderd my Konis today.

To adjust the rebound the damper must be fully compressed. This means that any time you want to change the rebound setting you'd neeed to fully disassemble the suspension. The external adjuster is like the knob that comes stock on Koni Sport models that alows the rebound to be adjusted any time you want by just turning an adjuster at the end of the damper shaft.

And that external adjustment alone is worth WAY more then a mere $25. I had AGX's on my 300 which had external adjustments, and if I had the money, I'd do this conversion to my Koni's on the 3G in a heartbeat without even 1 second thought.

Yea for that price I wouldn't have to think twice.

They are already adjustable just not externally. Jim was great at helping me select what setting to put mine at with my springs and it rides rather well for being dropped.

I would like to get mine converted to double adj but not at $300 each if they gave mykwikcoupe the proper info which im sure it is. I done see what its so much since the Koni Yellows are not even that much.

The Koni yellows aren't double-adjustable though. The valve assembly is probably much more complex to allow the compression damping to be changed.

In some applications they are double adjustable. Curiously, only import application that I could find in the catalog was for Ferraris and the NSX. No double adjustable for any Audi, BMW, not even Porsche's. That is because Koni offers a line are super expensive struts geared to racers and they want people to buy those if they want the double adjustable. I know of one guy that bought a set of these special sturts to use in a 350Z, cost him around $3k.

I respectfully totally disagree. How strange that Gordon would say that, especially since their cheaper competitor offers double adjustability, the KYB AGX. Only thing that makes them "not worth the effort" is their insane fee. Double adjustable struts would let you better adapt to the different springs that are avaliable. And it would be a god send to coilover user's were spring rates vary more. But at $300 each, jezz man, forgetaboutit.

Well I wanted to add the external adjuster to them so I can adjust the rebound. The double adjustablilty would be nice with my Dropzone coilovers, but for $1200 it might be cheaper to make some other cars struts fit.

Oh i though the yellows were double adjustable for some reason. My friend has them on his Prelude and they seem better than the reds cause he is running the shitty Weapon-R Coilovers and it rides pretty well considering.

That would be because the Yellows have a heck off allot more compression dampening and of course rebound dampening. Red's seam to have a spring rate limit of around 350LBS or so whereas the yellow can deal with up to 500/600LBS spring rates. The yellow's are a higher level as your friend prelude ride showed you.
Their comming out with Koni yellows for the G35 and 350Z in the new year, but I'm not sure their gonna meet my needs as they designed them to not be as stiff as the 350Z struts I'm running now. I'm not gonna give nothing up, I want more
