How long will my 3g go?

Hey i have two questions. One is weather i should keep my 3g or not because i will be now traveling about 60 miles a day for work and im not sure if my car should be subjected to all those miles. as of now its got 165,000 and its a CARB it runs pretty good so far but should i put this wear and tear on it? will a 3g hold up past 175k?

My last question is if anyone konws about the gas milage on a 4dr CARB accord. Its an 88 but the fuel guage is not to accurate so im not sure how much im paying for gas. I thought i had it to 20 miles per gallon but that seems to low,.

It will go as long as you want to keep repairing the small stuff. A good repair lasts a long time on these cars. I don't think 300k would be to much to ask of a well looked after 3g. Parts will be available for a long time. In Canada I get 37MPG...thats about 31MPG in the USA

I j/k but right now mine is running at 196K and getting about 32 mpg thanks to the new fuel injectors. Many other members on this board have higher mileage and still get good range. Just make sure you keep the main things running well, (Engine, Oil, Fluids, Tranny, carb or EFI sys.) it should last you beyond 175K

The 3g Accords are just about some of the most durable, reliable cars ever built. The A20 is bulletproof, plain and simple. As long as you take care of it (like any car), these little beasts will last about as long as you care to keep driving it, or somebody crashes it. The reliability really can't be beat.

Mine currently is about to turn 324,000 miles and still runs like brand new, literally. Motor and tranny and everything is all original, only repair ever done to the engine was a headgasket @ 275k, and the original factory clutch finally went out at 321k miles. During a recent compression test, my compression across all 4 cylinders ranged from 199-203 psi.... that's DAMN good, being that it's all original piston rings and everything. Don't worry about putting 60 miles a day on your car... that's nothing for a 3g. Mine drove 140 miles per day to work and back for several years up until 253k and it never even bat an eye. I still put on 25-30k miles per year, and feel comfortable to take my car anywhere in the country at any time. No worries here! Still cruises smoothly @ 80-85 mph down the turnpike each and every day.


This was from last November, with 305k miles I drove from central Illinois to south Florida (~1400 miles), while towing a 1000lb trailer, and had another 350lbs or so in the trunk/backseat, and 2 adults. Drove about 11 hours straight for 2 days, she didn't miss a beat whatsoever. Not one single problem, and it didn't even go through a drop of oil on the whole trip (and still doesn't). That pic was taken in Clanton, Alabama, btw.

Oh yea, on the highway with the a/c on the whole time, I get 31-33 mpg, even going 80-90 mph

I have almost 250,000 miles and running with a touch of blue smoke coming out and it gets me here and there no problem whatsoever. Don't worry about it! You'll be fine.

Thanks for your help guys i had no idea really.I know in american cars like my old mustang it went out at about 150k blew the engine. I have the orginal engine that came with the car i hope i dont have problems. Thats good to know though

Only 60 miles a day? HA! I started a 220 mile commute when mine had over 200K mi on it. That was for 9 months - over 5000 miles a month. I only had to change to oil/filter once a month.
On the hwy, mine gets 36-37mpg near 80 and drops off from there. Got 40mpg hwy regularly when new.
I get 30 around town now.
Mine has almost 288K on it now.
The carbed 3gs always got better mileage than the FI versions, BTW.

Don't worry about 60 miles. I drive 110 miles round trip for work. Then who knows how many miles after work. Mine has 265000 and the last tank of gas I averaged over 37mpg. You just can't compare these engines to most other cars. Change the oil and they won't quit. I've got 2300 miles on this last oil change so far and it hasn't burned a drop of oil. If the person that owned the car before you changed the oil regularly you're in good shape.

The only thing I've seen hold up as long as a 3g is my girlfriend's camry, but it's still not even half as fun to drive in any way.

Yep if you just take care of it, it should go for a long time. Don't forget about doing regular maintainence like tune-ups, oil/filter changes etc. Don't just wait for something to break before you do something. Keep the fluids clean. Like Vinny said they just seem to keep on going,going and going.....

hondas are great .... my accord gave out at 106,000 but only becauce i really didnt care about it and beat it..... didnt replace things that needed to be ..... my beater civic has 250,000 on it and it runs new.... it will run forever if i do the normal maitninence....

My accord has 153K on it and still outhandles most cars on the back roads and mountains everyday. For how old these cars our the suspension is not bad. In other cars I have worked on they needed every suspension bushing at about 100K. This honda's control arm bushings had so little wear i didnt even replace them. The brake lines are even still original on my accord and they have no sign of dry rot whatsoever. The only parts that seem to break in the suspension on these are the ball joints and the front sway bar bushings get worn out. As for the engine the only prob I have is leaking but that will be fixed with new gaskets. I have cruised this car in 90+ degree heat going about 90 and have never had the temp go up to half. This car just amazes me. Not often do you see cars as old as mine around college that dont either puff out various colors of smoke or make some kind of engine noise.

Hell yea. This thread makes me happy. I only have 140k with 20k on a rebuilt motor. I get 35mpg average and upwards of 43mpg cruising at 80. Carbureators rule.

The only car I have seen go longer than a 3g was a friends mom's early 80s Mercedes diesel that went close to 400k. The motor was still kickin, It had a seat fall through the floor while driving. no mechanic ever told them about all the rust on the underside. They never got under it since it was a tank. The car rode smooth and was a nice driver. For their 20th anniversiry his dad baught his mom a C320. I have never seen her so happy. It is a bueatiful car. My friend lost his liscense for a year and when he retook the test he drove the new Mercedes, man was he a pimp at the BMV that day.

The engines last a very long time its true. but man all my other parts decided to go at once. upper ball joints alternator ummm TV cabel Brakes, Rotors, radiator. Then again my luck is not too good. Maybe i should take up a hobby.

all it takes is the right care. I use quaker state for higher milage engines in my car and it seems to work pretty good although its a bit expensive. Who cares though its only 4 quarts
