Woah - That Was Loud!!!

Driving the hilly backroads to work this morning, my car backfired three times really loud - and a big poof of smoke followed . . . I was going down a hill about 60 in 4th each time when it happened . . . I'd let off the gas and then - boom!

Then the car was sputtering pretty bad until I hit the highway and then it couldn't be happier to purr along nicely at 70 . . .

. . . this car seems to have a split personality - sometimes it sputters quite a bit but most of the time it runs pretty smooth . . . what gives?
