    The 3g won't go below 2g

I can't get my car to go below 2g RPM. It was running fine, and then it just started acting up. I don't know if it is a vacuum leak, a kinked cable, or what. Anyone have any ideas? When I start it cold it idles at about 2.5, which is normal, but before I could tap the throttle and it would jump down to around 1.5, and when completely warm it would be aroun 1. Now it won't go below 2 no matter what I do. I need to fix this fast cuz I don't want to drive it when it is doin that, and my 77 K20 isn't exactly an economy truck.

Thanks in advance for ny and all info.

Spray some carb cleaner on the choke linkage / throttle shaft, plates and linkage

And also spray small amounts near the vacuum lines to check for leaks.

see if the idle diaphragm / throttle controller is pushing against the thottle linkage... if it is then I would assume its a vacuum leak.

If the idle is high without the idle diaphragm engaged then it might be a stuck throttle cable or funky choke.

Your idle controller took a crap. It's on the right, lower front of the carb. Take it off, throw it in the trash, and plug the vacuum lines.

Yea my car has done that a few times. It will be running good then the idle will jump to about 2k and it won't stop until I turn off the engine.

Well, I sprayed carb cleaner, and nothing happened. So it's either not a vaccum problem, or I didn't spray in the right area. I cannot figure this out. I don't know what to look for. Could a sensor be out? Could it just need a tune up? I don't have a clue. Where do you check for codes at? I looked in the FAQ, but that only tells me what the codes mean, it doesn't say where/how to check them. I just had the alternator replaced a couple weeks ago, I don't see how that could affect anything, but would that cause things to mess up? Everytime I turn if off, it diesles pretty bad, that is why I am not driving it, but my truck is killing me in gas so I need to get this taken care of ASAP. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

Codes will show up underneath your drivers seat, look under the drivers seat in the back you should see a little box with a flap on it, lift the flap up and you'll see a blinking light indicating your code.

Ok, I checked for codes, but nothing came up. However, I then unplugged my O2 sensor, and checked again, still nothing. Either I am looking in the wrong place, the light is not working, or my computer is fried. I am pretty sure I am checking in the right location though. I moved my seat all the way forward, and popped out the little tab on the box under my seat. If my computer is fried, would it cause my car to act up like it is? or would it not run at all? This is getting very frustrating. My truck is costing me about $10 a day in gas, so I really need to get my car going. If anyone has any other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get this thing fixed soon, I might just have to take into a shop, but I hate doing that because it cost even more money, and then I still don't know how to fix the problem if it happens again. I like working on my car myself, that way if a problem should arise agai, I know what to do. Anyway, all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

I have never seen a code on my ecu either. Even with a blown engine. If you do not have emissions checks you should just yank out all the vaccum lines. There is a thread in the howto section.

i think one thing that can cause that is a dead (or dying) alternator. my car's idle wouldn't kick down because the alternator was dead. good luck

I just had the alternator replaced a few weeks ago. It went out while I was heading down to Coos Bay. When I stopped it would be revving around 2.5RPM and I couldn't to get it to go down. So I would turn it off, I never heard/seen a vehicle diesel so much for so long. But it was replaced, and it should be good, unless they installed a bad one AGAIN! (It's a long story, PM me if you want to hear it) How can I check to see if the alternator is shot. If it is, that would piss me off like you wouldn't believe. After all the shit I went through when it went out before. Anyway, how can I check it?

my86dx4dr, my car is light blue, I guess it could almost look silver, and my front end is a bt tweeked. You might have seen me cruising through Estacada, I wouldn't doubt it if you hang around there at all. I actually live just outside Estacada, on Wildcat. The road that leads up to Eagle Fern Park. I think there is a silver 3gee that is parked on Broadway up the hill. I see it there all the time and it never moves. That might have been the one you've seen. I know there are a couple 3geez that cruise around Estacada, but I think they are owned by older people that don't care about them.

Have you tried what jb2wheels said to do on 9/27? That sounds reasonable and simple enough to try....

You can get the alternator and battery checked at autozone. It is possible to have a rebuilt alternator that is a dud, my brother just got one and had to return it.

I am not sure what the idle controller is. I looked through my Chiltons, but it really didn't mention anything about it. Does someone have a pic, or diagram of it? That would help me out, and then I could start the process of elimination. I don't believe it's my throttle cable, I have looked it over and played with it, and it seems fine. I will have to compare my car to y mom's 88LX. They should be the same right? There weren't too many changes from 87-88 were there? This is really getting on my nerves, but thanks for all the suggestions.
