Ok, so my A/C doesn't work and has never worked on my car, dunno what's wrong with it. I hear all the time about people taking it out for power gains, what will I get from removing it?

it's only about a 70lb weight reduction aswell..
thats really the only gain you will get out of it..other then the fact that you won't be suckin soo much power to run it aswell..
you get more of a gain by disconnectiong your power steering as i did
i got about 5hp to the wheels, and the pleasure and fun without the power steering...much more fun to drive..

If you disconnect the belt you will notice a small hp gain, less draw from the engine means more power. Removing the system shaves at least 50 lbs. The process is pretty straitforeward remove the compressor, bracket, lines, condensor, evaporator, and the filter/dryer.
Yea, powersteering is overated as well.

there's no way I'm gonna give up my power steering
so does the a/c take away power from the motor even when it's not on? I know it definately does when you turn it on, but just being hooked up is it taking power?
The amount of power your A/C uses when not running is probably not measureable or noticable. I'd also be surprised if the entire A/C system weighs more than 20 pounds. It depends a lot on what compressor you have, but mine is this tiny little thing about the size of a grapefruit. The hoses, evaporator and condensor can't be more than a few pounds and the receiver/dryer might be a pound or two.
That said, if it does not work and you never intend to fix it, then you might as well yank it all, but don't expect much performance gain from it.
If you'd like to make it work, I'd be happy to test it for you. I have all the tools to check and charge A/C systems and I can purchase R12 for around $20-$25 a can (usually 2 cans are needed to fully charge our systems)
Gregg
The 1989 Honda service manual lists the A/C as adding 22 kg (49 lb). It doesn't indicate a weight difference between the Nippon Denso and the Keihin compressors.
Mike
The heavist part is the bracket that holds the a/c pump to the engine, that alone is at least 15lbs.

Thanx, I might take you up on that....Originally posted by Gregg86DX

yea.. A/C doesn't draw anything from the engine unless the A/C is on..
you won't notice much of a gain if you remove it..other then your car being about 50lbs lighter...
ohh man.. you guys don't know what your missig with no Power-steering..it's great.. I love it..now you get the " true" feeling of the road esp going on curvy roads.. ahhhhhh soooooo much fun..
total Initial D baby!!!!!!!!! haha

besides weight gain, dont expect hp increase.
its just a myth. add a tonado fuel saver as well. lol

There will be about a .05hp gain form not having it hook to the belt. Weight loss is the only big gain around 50lbs. If you want to recharge it to see if it works which is probably all it needs. You can check to see if there is anypressure in the lines first before you go out at buy the coolant to find out you allready have it in the system. Check the A/C line next to the battery and there is a little screw on cap. This is covering up the filler (similar to a tire stem on a bike, car).
I'm your local R&D nut. Fabracting, welding, tuning and breaking my stuff so you don't have to.
i'm tellin you guys..
remove your power steering....you won't regret it!!!!
i'm all for no power steering...man.. i LOVE it!!
