CV joint going bad... what symptoms did you have?

Hi, I've noticed clicking noise whan turning but now I also have some trible noise when breaking. It doesn't look like it's caused by brakes... The sound is like a jet plane landing close to the car and it only happend when I breake but not always (maybe 80% of the time). Did anybody had such symptoms associated wit ha CV joint? Is it dangerous for the tranny? Is it safe to drive for a little while more, 4 or 5 days? Thanks.

it may be safe to drive but i wouldn't risk it. i have seen CV joints locked up and people get into accidents.

clicking around corners.. then it gets reallly loud.. and it starts to happen wheile going straight...

That's your outer CV joint.... and I would get it done ASAP. You can drive it for a while, but I sure wouldn't.

The jet plane landing noise while braking sounds like slightly warped rotors to me. When I brake going from over 70 mine sounds like that. Its only when the rotors are getting hot from braking alot so it doesnt really bother me. It happens to my malibu which I just replaced everything brake-wise, but it only happens when braking from around 100 so it doesnt bother me at all. My 3g did it both before and after the shot half shafts were replaced. It sounds like an unrelated prob to me but first replace the half shafts and then worry about that problem.

The constant clicking through turns and grease splattered all over your wheel well are the first signs that you're in for an axle change.

Hi, I mentioned "plane landing" noise supposedly comming from a bad axle but as some people pointed out axle only gives clicking noise. Grinding was just bad breake pads on the left wheel. Funny thing, the ones on the right weel were in much better condition... BTW, replacing breake pads is very easy. Doing it first time it took me like 12 minutes...

If the brake pads were worn badly on one side and not on the other the caliper could be partially frozen and causing the brake rotor to warp. If the rotor looks purple-ish it could be seized. My malibu made that noise when braking for months before I figured out that was the problem. One day when I went to touch the wheel after I got home from a drive and noticed that they were red hot. Before that I thought it was either the driveshaft or rear axle but I am glad it was only the brakes. It still makes the airplane noise now but only when braking from real high speeds.

Only hard parts about the half shaft installation is the spindle nut and getting the ball joints apart. It's a pain but if you have to replace either of the ball joints at the same time it would make it somewhat easier. Good luck. If you have some jack stands, a jack, and some tools do it yourself, otherwise get it done soon. I have heard plenty of people getting stuck with a broken cv joint so get it fixed before you get left stranded.

axles don't usually make noises like that, either they click or they cause vibration. You are probably driving on a worn out brake pad set

I replaced the pads and now it's just clicking again.

I just had to replace my CV joint; Effing thing blew when I was turning onto a main rd.
The CV joint housing (a fricking casting) blew apart. At least it was the one I redid in nov, so its on warranty... except for the wasted day and a half.
Ah well.... gotta love Honda.

mine started with the right side. it would click only going around corners. it drove for years with that. then the driver's side started up. after that it kept getting worse. it would vibrate ugly. my friend had the same problem on his MX-3, it locked up and he wrecked his car totaling it. yeah, it can do damage to your tranny and other stuff by way of a lot of heat generated because of no grease to lube the teeth or joints insided. i'd say you can drive it, but dont drive it on the freeway. keep it on somewhat slow city streets. i'd save some money and get new axles put on. i did that a few years ago at Pepboy's for $278. not bad i though considering other places wanted near $400.

Can you say Bearing is going out. These must be pressed in and out must take the knuckle off and then to a machine shop.

so the cv joint is attached to the axle, correct? so if i order a new axle the cv comes with it as one unit?
