Could have been a Levin or Trueno. Both popular drift cars that look a lot like 3rd gen hatchies.

I would bet it was because they look very similar to our hatch's and they are very popular to drift in.

FWD cars aren't usually used for drifting. It was probably one of the other suggested.

There's a huge underground following for the AE86 Truenos and Levins in Japan. There's all sorts of cool parts for them.

Nah Initial D didn't start the AE86's popularty.
Maybe with the new generation of tuners... but the old school guys I doubt it. It's like saying fast and the furious made the civic popular. To outsiders it might look like that but, no.

True dat! TRD still makes replacement parts for the old corrola, celicas, and so forth. There IS a big following in japan, just like the old hot rodders are well followed here in the states.

That's what I was thinking, a lot of people mistake those for 3g hatches.

I have a video of an AE86 smoking the shit out of a R33 Skyline RALLY STYLE!!! That's right, not just on the straight... in the turns as well... Now, you ask why I praise the Supra? I believe the GT-S and the Supra have the same platform... Either way, Toyota had their shit together.

Yeah and don't forget who was driving that AE86, none more than the famous Keeichi Suchiya. Versus some unknown guy in the skyline. That was Suchiya's personal car with his own tweaking on the suspension and so forth. The skyline was stock and the course was an actual driving course. I don't know, your call...
