    Head Removal

I'm not trying to repost, but the searches are down at the moment. Is there a thread or a write up of removing the head? What all needs to be done/taken off so on? I just spent about 10 minutes looking over the engine bay and decited i'd like to read about someone else doing it first...

    Thanks

    _ Justin

Mine's off right now . . . I'm sure I'm leaving off something, but this is how mine worked out . . .

    • put it up on ramps
    • drain engine oil & coolant
    • remove battery
    • label & then disconnect spark plug wires
    • spin engine to TDC at #1 (use timing marks at crankcase
      opening mine takes a 17mm - spin it counter-clockwise)
    • mark position & then remove distributor
    • remove a/c pump (or whatever it is) and two engine mounting bolts near #1 cylinder
    • remove power steering pump
    • remove alternator (I had to replace mine)
    • remove all belts from crankshaft pulley (mine had 3)
    • remove crankshaft pulley nut (what a chore!)
    • remove valve cover
    • remove timing belt covers (mine has upper/lower)
    • detach relevant coolant hoses
    • detach relevant electrical wiring and connectors (ground to valve cover, et cetera)
    • remove (or cut off) timing belt
    • disconnect exhaust manifold at downtube
    • disconnect exhaust manifold support at engine block
    • disconnect metal tube going from exhaust manifold to intake manifold
    • remove cam-driven gear & shaft for oil pump
    • remove carburetor (first remove the air filter cover, et cetera)
    • remove head bolts
    • remove head
    • remove intake & exhaust manifolds
    • remove thing at end of head near #4 cylinder
    • take head to shop
      - do not have valve guides knurlled and reinstalled - use new valve guides
      - do not let the engine head slide off the bench onto a concrete floor

    Please keep in mind, I have a 2G w/the EK1 engine & it's a little different than the 3G's . . . also . . .
1 - mark how belts were installed & reinstall with same orientation
2 - I use labeled envelopes for the fasteners
3 - take digital photos to help w/assembly & so forth

    Hopefully, this will help . . . ? . . .

Well you don't have to remove the crank pulley unless you are changing the timing belt. It will help to know why you are removing the head so I can help you with shortcuts. The list above is everything and a lot of time you don't need to remove all that stuff. I have done it with just removing the exhaust and head bolts and the drain coolant.

    WHy? HEre's why :)

I just bought my car... had a broken timming belt, so I had guessed the valves/pistons might be shot. I pulled off the valve cover, undid the rocker arm rod, and did a compression test. My results where somewhere in the range of 30-0-91-0. So I'm going to pull the head off, possiably fix, or possiably replace. That's why Thanks for your help, and any shortcuts you could offer
Its fuel injected, if that matters any
