    Startin from scratch

    Hello all,
I'm a newbie to this whole thing and have had my 89 Accord LX-i for about 2 years now

My question is about basic upkeep of the engine. My car was fine up until 118K when the engine siezed! Well, got a new A20 that had 35K already on it from Japan. Since that time I have put about 47K on the engine. The odometer is at 165k right now and I'd like to get the most out of the engine as possible.

As far as what I take care of, its just the basics. I change the oil every 3k miles along with the oil filter. I put in a K&N air filter probably about 30k miles ago. I recently had a fule injector leak, got that replaced and saw today that another is leaking, so I'm thinking about swapping the other three that have not recieved attention.

I heard that the transmission oil should be changed, but have never done it and don't know the correct regiment as far as how many miles shpould pass befor it should be changed.

I am looking for any quick simple suggestions that would help out the performace and am looking for tips as far as how often I should replace certain components or change certain fluids.

From the looks of it there are some pretty knowledgeable people in here and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

-I change my tranny oil once a year. I'm sure that's more often that necessary, but it seems to keep my car happy

-Set aside a couple of hours and look through posts in the performance section of the forum. There are some amazing things happening in the 3G Accord world right now. More performance parts are available now than ever before - aftermarket pistons, camshafts, turbocharger kits, flywheels, and plenty of appearance mods too like carbon fiber hoods and headlight conversions. With time, money and committment, you can make your 3G into a car you're very happy with both in performance and appearance.

Pick up an 86-89 Accord manual off Ebay to find out about replacing parts and fluids.

    I hope this helps

Download the service part of the manual off Pauls site... I don't know where the link is though.

Welcome to the site. Lots of great information and people here.

normally i'd say use the search feature to its full advantage, but since its down you're pretty much on your own until its fixed. I think just about every problem/issue/question about every aspect of the 3rd gen accord has been asked at one time or another. You just gotta be creative in how you search.

K&N filters are a good idea. I use their oil and air filters all the time.
Make sure the motor has correct timing, keep the fuel filter changed once a year, use good plugsand wires (NGKor better), Sounds like you have the right idea allready. Keep all the fluids good and the alignment strait with correct air pressure in the tires. Polish er up and always keep wax on it. Hopefully it should last you several more years.

I have put a K&N on EVERYTHING I have owned. Usually within the first month of owning it.
Learning to tune the radio was easy.. ..now on to the rest of the car....

The Honda manual recommends chaning the transmission oil and brake fluid every 30k and the fuel filter every 60k. The transmission takes about 2.5 quarts of oil: 10W-30 for cooler climates or 10W-40 for warmer climates.

Well I guess I'm the first to realize this. Your motor isn't from Japan if it's an A20 motor. The Japanese 3rd gen Accords had a B20A with a DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam). Upgrade your air intake and get an exhaust system with a header.

hot cam, header, 50shot of nitrous, high-flow injectors, bored out block, P&P, drill some holes, some crazy ignition stuff, reinforced drive-shafts, hoodscoop.... lol

i got a question... this oil change concept.... what is oil????

i'm joking around... change oil regularly, change spark plugs regulary, watch out for codes comin from ECU, make sure all ur ignition is fine, K&N is good choice for filters... use good oil too... don't buy cheap ass stuff

    from the faq section

What's the B18A? (JDM DOHC Accord engine 1.8L carbed)
This engine is similar to the B20A but has a smaller displacement.

However, it uses carburetors instead of Fuel injection. It's a DOHC engine.

This engine has 130 HP @ 6000 rpm
