Sub myth?

My buddy says if I stuff poly fill stuff (the filling inside of pillows) into the sub box, it makes the sub *think* the box is 2 times bigger. He says it sounds a lot better.

My reaction was "Umm.... okay."

Is this true?

Yes, to an extent. The poly fill basically reflects the sound waves due to the fiber stands structural integrity and thus the waves seem to travel farther since they bounce back and forth around.

But if you add too much, the waves will eventually begin to cancel themselves out, bringing a dull sound and require more power to make the same amount of sound.

Hmm. I should have thought of that side of the matter. I remember back in Chemistry about sound waves reflecting.

go to http://www.sounddomain.com and search for poly-fill in the forum. Its some like a pound of polyfill for every cubic foot or something like that...suppose to work, tell us when u do it cuz i wanna do it too but haven't remembered to buy some polyfill

I cracked open an old 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 foot shelf speaker box with a 10in sub, 2 mids and a tweeter. It had a decient amount of poly in there... my guess is that it does work well. Those shelf speakers had great sound. Too bad we blew the subs in them.

dude, just go to a fabric store and get quilt batting, its like 2 or 3 dollars a bag. It does the same thing and i put some in one of my 15" boxes and it did sounds a tad better, not much tho.

polyfill is actually ADDED to make the sub act like it's in a bigger box, it slows down reflecting waves. This is what I read anyway...

it's possible some speakers sound louder without it but there are also some that sound louder with it.

I agree with you. I used that stuff in my subs, back when I had subs anyway, and it gave it a better tone. I don't see the point in paying the horrundus markup that car audio shops charge.

i have a duak 10" power wedge buy JL Audio and it cam with the poly fill in I think it made a big difference in my opinion
