    Question Popping out of reverse???

Ok fellas here's the deal, I just did a tranny swap and installed a manual tranny, adjustable short shifter and a new ACT II clutch..... It shifts into gears 1-5 with no problems but when I put it into reverse it pops out after like a second or two.... I tried holding it but all it did was still pop out and grind a little.... I tried giving it more gas and letting off the clutch real easy but it did it again.... Now, I'm thinking that maybe my shifter may be adjusted little too short and that might be causing the problem but then wouldn't it happen to all of the gears as well if that was it??? So what do you guys think???

Sounds either linkage or clutch related. Check all your cables and make sure everything is accurate.

This may not be the problem but a similar thing happeded to me. While in 5th it would pop out of gear. The tranny was low on fluid. make sure it all the way up to the fill plug. Keep pouring it in untill it starts to leak out.

Or you could just need an adjustment on the linkage/shifter.

I'll check the fluid level but if it was the fluid level wouldn't effect the rest of the gears as well???

I know 5th and R sit higher than the rest of the gears. Also, your reverse gear may be shot.

Well, lets just pray that you're right about 5th and the reverse gear sitting higher than the rest of the other gears.... If this is true than maybe it is the fluid level because when I filled up the tranny, it had jack stands under the front wheels so maybe the tranny isn't as full as it needs to be....

I'm starting to think that the fluid level is the problem.... Now I can't wait to get home..... The thing is I hope I haven't caused any problems driving it....

Yea I made that mistake of filling it with it still raised. There is a ball and detent that is suppose to hold it in gear but if that was missing you would have problems with 5th too.

 OK guys, fluid level isn't the problem here.... I filled it up last night and it was doing the same thing.... The only thing left to check is the height of the short shifter because maybe if I have it too short than that could cause it to pop out of gear.... If it doesn't turn out to be that then I'll probably end up taking it to the shop to have that reverse gear fixed.... I just don't understand it, all the other gears are fine, it's just the damn reverse thats keeping me from working out all of the kinks from this mani. swap as well......

Well you might want to take it out your self if you can't fix it by adjusting the shifter. Paying some one to work on a tranny is not cheap esp if they have to take it out and install. It would take about 5hrs just for the removal and install and then you have the tear down of the tranny, thoses costs would add up fast.

Problem with that is I can remove and install a tranny but when it comes to tearing it down I don't know if I can handle that, mainly because I don't know what I'll be looking for.....

True but hopefuly it is something basic hopefuly it is. You might want to try to do it and hope for the best. Maybe something just came loose and are tranny's are actually quite simpile.

I think I might just take it to this Honda specialist shop that I know about around the way and see what they say because I've been working on this car for like 2 months now and I'm not trying to climb back under it again.....

Try to disconnect the linkage all together. Then put in reverse with a cresant wrench, start engine with clutch in and see if it stays engaged.

Now that I might try!!! So if it doesn't stay in reverse after that then it has to be the reverse gear....

well that would help to figure out if the prob is in the shift linkage but all the other gears are working fine so it would be a waste of time but if time is no prob then go ahead and try it but I don't think you will get anything out of it.

No, time is a problem because this car needs to be out on the road and not sitting in my garage from a bad reverse gear or something..... The thing is I'm not trying to spend a lot of money on this repair so if I knew how to do it myself I would have already but I know if I open the thing up I'll probably mess it up worse than it already is......
