    head swap,89-88

i was wondering if i could swap the head, throttle ody, and many other of the upper pariferals of my 1989 lxi auto transmission into my 1988 manual transmission lxi. i believe because i am just changing from the head up i do not affect the transmission. also, would i be able to keep my 88 ecu in the car.

    thanks

This just caught my eye but I don't remember seeing it earlier for some reason. I'm surprised no one answered it yet. Anyways, you will have no problems. The 88-89 LXi's are basically the same. It's the 86/87 which is different from the 88/89's. You will just have to disconnect the throttle cable from the auto but I think that's the only difference.

ok, but they arent by any means exact. the tb are differend, as well as vacuum lines, and the intake manifold.

    thanks

then you are looking at a car with an older year or a swapped motor because the change was made for the 88 model year. Give me the serial # of the motors and I'll tell you.

pos, i know a little about the lxi's, and the 88-89 were not identical, they were similar, almost exact, but not the same. the throttle bodies are different: the tps mounts are different, the fast idle air inlets are different (89 has 2 inlets, 88 has 1), there is no vacuum line on the 89's for the idle diaphram thing, and thats about it, oh and the seccond coolant line on the 88 faces down where on the 89 it is horizontal. there are subtle differences thet prohibit swapping parts, but functionality is quite similar.

i have to go to work but i will get some specs and pictures this evening.

I thought the 88 and 89 heads were identical and any head would work with any block on the 3g. You might lose a lil power, but I thought they would bolt up and work anyway.

the thing runs decent, but the tps from the 87 dont likeb the 88 computer, not the workings, but that it starts already moved in the 87's. anyway, i got a low compression reading on my fourth cylendar, although my father said it looked like i didnt have the gage seated correctly. i got 165 on the 1st 3 and 140 psi on the last. i got my 89 lxi sitting in y yard so i think i am going to swap that engine into my 88, but of course keep the manual tranny in the 88,if anyone sees flaws to this plan plzlet me know
