Been driving in Idaho 16 years and never owned a set of snow tires. Not to mention, I have never been in a wreck due to slick roads. (knock on wood). I run the Toyo tires, and on days that it is slick I still pass the stupid farts that are doin 35 mph in the 65 mph zones.
As far as studs go, they are great on the front, but if you put them on the back it makes it hard to power slide arround corners in the snow. And most all the local tire shops will only put studs on all fours. They won't put them on just the front.
